According to the World Loanword Database, mfereji was borrowed from Arabic falğ ("split" [noun]). There is no such Wiktionary entry, but it's mentioned in the entry for Classical Syriac ܦܠܓܐ (/pɛlɡɑ(ʔ)/, "half; middle; waist; part; sect; division"), along with Hebrew פלג (péleg, "stream, brook, tributary; section, part; fraction").

On Mt Kilimanjaro the water channels that feed a lot of the fields are called mfereji.

So what is the difference between "mrefu" and "mdefu"?
