Best way to learn?
Hi, was curious how everyone else learns Polish words. I turn off the words and force myself to type. Also, I only continue past a section if I get all the lessons completed (finish level 5). What are your best methods for retaining information in Polish?
In terms of Duolingo, I think you're doing everything you can since the polish tree is very limiting at this time (compared to more popular lessons like Spanish and French where the trees are longer, you can now use Labs with these languages, and you can easily find speaking groups). As you do the ENG->POL lessons you may want to try flip flopping to POL->ENG lessons even if you already speak English just to get a different perspective. To eventually become proficient in Polish, I believe you'll need to go outside of Duolingo.
For myself the Pimsleur audio Polish lessons have been unbelievably helpful in improving my Polish speaking and accent. Duolingo has been helpful for learning new words and learning the grammar and spelling, while the Pimsleur has helped me with speaking and learning useful terms that would commonly come up in conversation.
It's not cheap, but it was worth the price. I've learned so much more and I'm not even half way through!
Also I'm lucky enough to know a native Polish speaker, so I get the privilege to speak with her often in Polish. (Which has been my best resource for learning.) If you're able to, find and make friends with a Polish speaker if you're serious about becoming a Polish speaker yourself.
Hope that helps! Good luck.
Thanks! Yes, I have many friends from Poland I speak with every day. I was a part of an exchange group to Warsaw last year and met so many amazing people! They inspire me to keep learning but I feel like I keep hitting roadblocks with this language.
