Thanks for the letter. It's very interesting to know that you are a linguist and you can easily learn languages. I really like your English. Thank you for correcting my text.
My occupation is medicine, geriatrics is the treatment of elderly people. I learned Hebrew to work in my specialty, and a little English, when I arrived in Israel from the Soviet Union. Since in my work I daily met with people speaking Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, English, French, Spanish and other languages, I tried several times to learn English, French, Spanish, but soon stopped. In this two reasons - the fear that you will not learn and also my own laziness. And yet a misunderstanding of the fact that you need to practice at least a year regularly. But now in Canada, I can use the knowledge of English too. I started working as a volunteer in a hospital for older people, like me but needing help.
Leonid ,Thank you !!
And thank you for a compliment, however my English, just like anyone else's, can always use some improvement :-)
I really like your story of how you've developed your interest in other languages through your work..
Yes in medicine you definitely need to be able to converse with people of very diverse backgrounds and plus there is the terminology of course..
Yes when I was in Israel, I noticed how many languages people use there,everywhere..It is very multicultural.
Good for you!! You really progressed so well! Learning has no age limits and you prove it!
Best wishes of health and well being for you and your family
Very impressive!! 4 years!!! Congratulations and good for you!! I am new on Duo. I am using Russian from English course to improve my Russian (I am fluent, but need practice) ; also I study French and Italian..because they are my heritage languages well done to you!!
So you speak Hebrew also..It is a unique ,expressive truly magic language. I studied it a long time ago when I studied languages..
Lets see if I can remember anything:-)) here it is!!
Thank you very much for your excellent review. I have to say thanks Duolingo because it really changes my life. It becomes my hobby. It is so simple only to exercise. I am fluence in Hebrew and it is my hereditary language. And I see you know good Russian and Hebrew. I like Canada, I stay here now for a few months with my small grandsons to help them
Best wishes Leonid
it took me a while to remember how to write this..-)))..
Thank you for a kind response! Many years ago, I had a very special opportunity to travel and to stay in Israel for a long period of time. I'm not Jewish, but I studied Hebrew as I was always interested in languages. I have been to many places around Israel, also I learned to speak and to understand well.
But I do not use the language anymore..But I can understand if someone speaks. Now I turned my attention to my own hereditary languages -French and Italian.
Israel as a modern country is marvellous and magic..very unique just like it's language and people..very tough and yet very warm and very emotional people..very diverse environment and multicultural.
I am so happy that you had a chance to visit your grandchildren in Canada..that is wonderful. There are many Jewish communities here in Canada ,mostly in big cities...Though I rarely hear people speaking Hebrew, but there are some. It always moves me to hear them and to be able to understand what they are saying.. Best wishes
Thanks for your letter. It's just a great gift on the Duolingo forum! Learn so much interesting about a real person as you are! This is a fantasy. And this is a real lesson of the English language, such a beautiful language, everything is very beautiful and understandable. It is very interesting that you know the Russian language, and you almost know Hebrew. French and Italian, too, will soon learn. I would take lessons from the students themselves at the forum since they know several languages.". You know so well about Israel. Yes, it's a modern country with interesting people and history. I have lived there for many years and it is always pleasant to listen to good words about my country from other people. Best wishes. Leonid
Hi,Leonid, thank you kindly for your warm response.. and for kind words in Hebrew,I understand very well what you wrote.. Very much appreciate it! I was not born in Canada, I grew up in Russia as a very young person , I am just like so many Canadians (and Europeans)of mixed European descent (mine is French/Italian). that is why I know Russian so well.. I am a linguist by my education. So languages are easier for me. Yes I liked Israel and it's people very much and spent enough time there to travel, and to see all the different places.
Yes,you are right ,one can learn a lot from other people on Duolingo as much as from the courses.
Just a little correction,if I may,to help you
We do not say in English "to make lessons" from the other people; instead you should say:"to take lessons" from the other people"...
The sentence that you wrote should be: "I would TAKE lessons from the students themselves at the forum since they know several languages."..
( or: they can speak several languages) your progress in English is remarkable and good for you!
Best wishes for you as well.
Thank you for noting my history of studying Hebrew and English. Although my success is very small in comparison with the successes of others, I really have a love for learning English and even for French, because I have meeting people with very interesting stories.
I really liked your profession and the history of studying English, Russian language, Hebrew, French and Italian. I wish you good health and success in life. Leonid
Thank you ,Leonid.. Very kind of you I wish you and your family same..:-))
