The English should be one thousand... not a thousand

Yes.
17 Agustus is Hari Kemerdekaan (Independence day).
It's a national holiday.

Not all national holidays (Indepence days included) are popular in some countries... Indonesia seems to have 'a lot of' national holidays. What do people do on August 17th in Indonesia?

The obvious thing is Flag Ceremony at formal institutions, then at villages, schools, etc. we also hold some competitions such as panjat pinang, balap karung, lomba makan kerupuk, and many more! :-D

Thanks. It sounds like a lot of fun. I just watched a panjat pinang competition from 2016!

Talking about "Flag Ceremony", have you seen this video :

I’d normally say one thousand nine hundred and forty five

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BennyCrack1

I put 2945 and got it right

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/boringtomi

can't I say nineteen forty five or "1945"?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Ayton.Geof

Should be one thousand nine hundred forty five. The word "and" signifies a decimal (1900.45)

I don't know where you're from, but that's not the case in British or Australian English. We normally say "and" after the hundreds.

They mark me wrong for spelling fourty wrong.

There is no "dan" in this sentence. Where does "and" come from?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sarah209565

Math teacher here! In USA it is wrong to use "and" in numbers except for a decimal! Like finger nails on a chalk board.
