No voice in "Type what you hear" exercises (Russian from English)
As of this evening (EST, 2018-08-22), there is no voice sound when a "Type what you hear" exercise comes up, which makes them hard. )) I'm doing the Russian from English course, Instrumental BE skill, and using Chrome.
Clicking the normal or slow repeat button also produces nothing. However, the Robot Lady Voice is working in Russian-to-English translation exercises, the non-vocal noises work, and Tinycards is fine.
I am also experiencing this issue. 8-23-2018 8:25 CDT Running in Chrome. No voice is produced in "Type what you hear", normal or slow speed buttons (or upon entry), however the non-vocal noises are registering (e.g.- getting an item correct "ding").
I had the same problem and updated Adobe Flash Player for the browser I'm using for Duolingo (Chrome), could temporarily hear the sounds for "Type what you hear" exercises and problem came back. Support pages at duolingo say it uses HTML5, not Flash. Same problems reported in a general thread, commenter reported that some changes were being made to the audio for the Russian course (male voice being added) and that it might be a few days before things settled down.
I hope this explains it. I occasionally have a sentence work but most don't. I did get one with a male voice so it sounds a credible reason. I will be patient for a few days and hopefully it will be sorted. I am using Silk on my kindle fire and already had a few problems with sound. The first sound exercise never plays for example meaning I always get the first one wrong. But subsequent ones used to work.
Problems still Aug. 23 7:50pm EDT
Hover over a word not working for all words, particularly the new word being taught.
Speaker icons both fast and slow not working on most exercises.
When speaker icon does work, it can't be interrupted and forced back to the start like before. This is very helpful to listen to a difficult or new word several times.
Speaker icon on discussion / answer page not working at all.
"Type what you hear" didn't work the two times it appeared for me today.
I sent in a bug report.
I use Chrome and Edge browsers on Win10 PC. The issue is the same on both. Both browsers and windows are up-to-date.
I believe I am also experiencing this issue (Chrome on Windows 10, Esperanto from English) I have submitted a bug report.
Let's hope they take your bug reports more seriously because you're a PLUS subscriber.
Back when I was a PLUS subscriber they still ignored my bug reports. After two months of that I told them to go **** themselves and cancelled my subscription. In order to keep me as a customer, you need to treat me like a customer, not like a worthless piece of trash.
Why anyone would want to spend their good money funding / supporting a company that isn't fixing basic bugs that affects them, and isn't even communicating about them, is beyond me. And that's what PLUS is, you don't get much out of it, the main benefit of it is that you're providing financial support to Duolingo.
That's something I used to want to do; I used to feel really grateful to Duolingo because of what they had created and how much I was benefitting from it. Now I just feel bitter towards the team of people who manage the site. It's like I'm a nobody to them and they make a bunch of choices I don't like while ignoring major bugs that I've put a lot of time into writing thoughtful bug reports about. In many cases I've seen bugs (as bad as this one here) persist for months or even a year or more.
The slow bug turnaround can be annoying, but working for large corporations I've learned not to attribute to arrogance what can be explained by disorganization, or lack of resources, or lack of communication. Most people really care about providing something worthwhile through their work.
I'm doing Russian from English, which didn't get bug fixes for a while because it runs on a volunteer basis. Now there are one or more volunteers working on it, and I frequently see updates.
I agree with pentaan's idea - if you feel bug fixes are more important than new features, tell the CEO that. He needs to hear it.
By the way, they seem to be adding more realistic voices than the old Robot Lady. This is good, but the rollout has been bumpy.
tird day now, all of a sudden my sound stopped working for Duo. Works for everything else. But alas, no sound for Duo. Well, actually, only for the "type what you hear" questions and there is no choice in the "report area" other than, sound is not correct.мне кажется что "the wheels are falling off Duo. Sorry Duo, I love your program, but I have noticed that there seem to be many more "bugs" in the system over the past month or so. I say this actually not as a complaint as Duo is awsome, but more as notification that something is amiss. Sure, I am stil not a total fan of the "new system" (but only because I cannot redo the same lesson multiple times since that was a majic way for me to "make things stick" - the other parts of the new system, I have warmed to quite well) but the hassles seem to go past just that. There are english words that don't seem to match the russian questions, the sound problem is ..... a problem, and if were at all possible, it would be great to have actual people saying words instead of the robot lady (sorry robot lady, I don't mean to hurt your feelings).
I also have the same problem... but only for Russian from English. French from Italian and English from Italian work perfectly.
