Circumflex over w
My wife has been stuck for several days on her Welsh lessons because we can not find a way to put a circumflex accent over a w in the word for water on the Smartphone when the image of a bottle of water is presented. If she types dwr, Duolingo counts it wrong instead of telling her that she should watch the accents, and the Smartphone does not seem to have a method for putting an accent over the w. How can she get past this impossible block?
If you cannot discover how to type ŵ and ŷ directly, get hold of the Swiftkey app.
She should find a better keyboard app. I use Swiftkey. It's free and provides all the diacritics I've ever needed, including ŵ. Press and hold a key and you get a menu of possible alternatives.
If you switch the default language on your phone to English UK it provides the necessary accent marks for Welsh typing.
I find that holding my finger on "W" on my Android phone gives me the choice of several accents that pop up. Does this not work for your wife?
It does not work on her iPhone and does not work on my Nook (which is an Android device) either, but Duolingo has not counted the w without the circumflex as wrong on my Nook even though it does count it wrong on her iPhone.
The iPhone app does seem to have some differences to the Android app. Looking online, W is not one of the letters that iPhone will natively allow you to accent. They suggest installing a third party keyboard (as others here have suggested). It looks like that's your only choice.
On an iPhone you have to add a Welsh keyboard (it's in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard and select Welsh). Once installed the Duolingo app will automatically open the Welsh keyboard for her when an answer needs to be typed in Welsh. Once that keyboard is installed, a long press on the Welsh W will allow you to select the circumflex, as well as the letter Y. I hope this helps! There's no need to download any other apps, just install the Welsh keyboard.
