I think "They are making porridge" should be okay


Indonesian verbs don't really have built in tense, so this could be referring to a past event, but you won't be able to guess that without something like "semalam".

Native speakers of certain languages might speak like this in English, like "Q. What you eat last night for supper? A. I make porridge."
