"Practice" repeat the same sentences too often

Hello,

I'm using Windows 10/Chrome. Taking the German course for about 3 years now. I mainly learn with the "practice" button until I feel I master every new skill I learn. but since the Crown update, "practice" became less helpful. It keeps bringing the same words/ sentences over and over again way too frequent- for example, I need to type the word "entschuldigung" about 10 times in one lesson, or a repeated sentence from the lower skills, although I answer correctly every time. On the other hand, the new skills I started barely appear. I don't know if it has anything to do with the Crown update, but that's about when it started. Adding to that, with the Crown version I can't keep practising a specific skill once I get to level 5, so the practice button is very important..

Is there a solution to that? did anyone else has that problem?

I do not think there is a solution to that, unless you get Duolingo to take down the Crown System, (which I doubt will happen). At this point, I would just do the individual skills when you need to master them. Sorry!

Wow, what a fast reply! thanks (both you and ABC14mar)!

Entschuldigung- I can definitely see how it can drive you insane... unfortunately, the Crown System allows you to practice the individual skill only until you reach level 5. Once you get there, there's no way to keep practising this specific skill...

My understanding is that it is supposed to use sentences and words which you had not been tested on/practiced for awhile. Entschuldigung is very well isolated inside of a lesson (or two) and you almost never need to write it outside of these skills - most other words show up all over the place... Which I expect is what causes the issue.

I had the same issue for a while on the main Practice button but it had calmed down a bit lately so I rarely see it... So you can try two things:

  • Find where it is in the tree ("Common phrases") in this case and do some practices on this specific skill

  • Do more generic practices - it should start getting a bit more diverse.

I did both and it seems to have unlocked itself. Might be just a coincidence but... who knows.

I did both... it didn't work... :(
"Entschuldigung" is just the worst example because it is a single word, but it does so with different sentences and never let it go. I practice a lot (a lot!) 500 - 1000 xp a day. so the repetition is even more annoying. Especially since there are new words I almost don't get to practice. I really hope they do something about it.

You may need to do it more than once - not sure.

I am also working on the German tree and "practice" is a lot more useful than it was early on...

That's part of how it feels like - the new words don't appear for awhile...

The frustrating part in each practice or lesson may be the thing that sometimes you get one sentence multiple times in a row!

Yep! that too. But at least I understand why it's happening... Duo just tests us on every possible way we let him: listening, speaking, writing, translation from German to English (for example). from English to German, and those tiles. I bet you have the option of the tiles off (prefer typing) like me. I think Duo should have just eliminated those tile-questions when you choose not to use it. Instead of turning them into typing-questions, because now you have a typing-question, and then a tile-question that becomes another typing-question..

It shouldn't be in a row

Why not? Once you are at level 5, you have a practice button on the skill and you can practice it as much as you want. You can also practice ones where you are not at level 5 (without doing new lessons) via the dumbbell on https://duome.eu/SharonNaor/progress

Thanks! I just tried this link, but the practice I do there is considered as a new lesson. You are right about the the practice button on a five-level skill, but I don't use it because it only has 1-3 sets of practice and then it repeats itself with the exact question order.

What exactly did you click on - the middle icon (the dumbbell - it is the last icon if you are already at level 5) or the link to the skill. The link to the skill IS a new lesson (it opens https://www.duolingo.com/skill/de/Relative-Pronouns for example)), the dumbbell opens https://www.duolingo.com/skill/de/Relative-Pronouns/practice which is a practice and not a new lesson.

PS: And yep, I just confirmed it again although I was sure - I did a quick practice and it did not touch my lessons.

You are welcome. There will be some repetition again (don't forget that Duolingo has a somewhat limited number of sentences) but it is better than nothing. And if you have issues with new vocabulary, a SRS may also help (Tinycards, Memrise, Anki - whichever you prefer)... I personally prefer Memrise - it is just flashcards but it tends to mix writing, picking from a list and listening (when the deck has sound) so... who knows. For this German course, I like this deck: https://www.memrise.com/course/335725/comprehensive-german-duolingo-vocabulary/

You can ignore the easy words (go through the deck and you will see the buttons for that) if you do not want to work on them :)

SOME repetition is just fine :) I left the last few skills on level 4, because I didn't want to lose the option to come back to it later on. now I can get to level 5 without worrying about that.

I've tried Tinycards and Memerise for a short while (haven't heard about Anski, I'll check it out) but that doesn't work for me. I need context and a deeper understanding of the words and its use rather than memorizing it- so, Duo is actually the best way for me.
