The Hindi sentence is a general statement and can also be translated as Apples are sweet. Given that this was an English to Hindi translation and the English sentence also implied a general statement, the Hindi translation is totally fine and wouldn't warrant "ek" to specify "an".
That's why this is a translation exercise and not a transliteration exercise. This also helps you understand the implied meanings and cultural nuances of the language you are learning.
