Thank you for taking out the health bar (edit : at least for me !)

Hello !

I don't know if it will be read by anyone in the Duolingo team but I still wanted to thank you all for taking out the health bar on iOS. I got the surprise the other day and even though I was used to the system, I realized how stressful lessons had become for me. I was always looking at the corner of my screen and being afraid I would have to do the lesson all over again, which took a whole bunch of the fun away. I remember being really angry when it was introduced but I didn't quit like I've seen many people do, and for several reasons : because I've made way more progress in a month on Duo than I would in a year of regular class, I can do lessons whenever I want, and the site is awesome in general (how else could I have learnt Norwegian than on here ?)

So this message is just a big thanks to everyone that has ever contributed to this awesome site or plan on doing it

I'm looking forward to see what's going to happen next ! I wish you all a great day !

Edit : thanks for all your comments and the nice lingots !

I agree! Finally Duolingo has accepted that Health has no purpose and, in fact, it makes language learning ineffective. Here is where I as well as many other Duolingo users stated our opposition to the Health system. We have had to fight for over a year to make this happen, but it finally has. What's next? Should we try to get Immersion and Activity Streams back?

Edit: Thanks for the upvotes and lingots!

What are those features ? I’ve never heard of them

August 30, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lemniscatarum

Activity Streams allowed you to post messages to other users and see their activity. It was removed apparently because it affected the servers.

Immersion allowed you to translate articles into the language you were learning, I think, and many people earned lots of XP from that. People in the EU couldn't use Immersion and only "0.01%" of people used it.

August 31, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sterkeste

Oh yeah I remember being able to post messages on people's profile ! How could you gain xp from immersion ?

August 31, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lemniscatarum

Probably from translating correctly or improving upon the current translation. I'm not sure because I didn't join when Immersion was there.

Why people in the EU cannot use Immersion? Does it mean that outside the EU is immersion still available?

I had health problems today. I was on an IPad

Me too. I. Still have the health bars. I was just there losing health. Why do we still have it. It’s the same as having an iphone

As of now, the removal of Health is an A/B test.

What problems ?

August 31, 2018

I would like to try Immersion, if it will be possible. Thx.

I think it was removed about two years ago.

This must be getting rolled out because I still had the health function on my phone when I did my practice last night. I really hope that it's being phased out, though, because I've found that it actually impedes my learning. (i.e., I make more mistakes when the health metre is present.)

August 30, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sterkeste

And I thought I was learning too many languages at once :D

August 31, 2018

I still have it too and i was just there. I end up buying gems now becaue i’m sick of stopping and having to do practices.

The health bar is why I went back to the Duo website - if it's gone, I might use the iOS app again.

August 31, 2018

dido, just went and checked the app but the health bars are still there and just as bad as you remembered them!

I love Heath Bars!

August 30, 2018

I understand why some people can like it, I guess it makes you more concentrated about not making mistakes ?

August 30, 2018

Bryan is referring to the Heath Bar (Candy Bar)...not Health Bar*, you missed an L in the title :P

I made a comment with pictures of both in order to compare them.

Heath Bar Not to be confused with Health Bar

Thanks for the graphic! I apparently never had the health bar either, so I didn't really understand what people were talking about here. It doesn't look familiar to me.

September 1, 2018

nice graphic, showing the five hours one mistake will set you back. watch out for typos.

September 2, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ISpeakAlien

I know. Five hours is quite a long time to have to wait after making one mistake.

September 28, 2018

I had that for a little while, but it went away soon after...

I love Heath bars too. I do not like Health Bars. I have no Heath bars, but I still have the Health bars. I hope the A/B test shows that Health is unhealthy and the Heath bars are good for you.

I've still got the health bar thing on iOS

August 30, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ISpeakAlien

Try updating your app. If it's still there, then that's a problem.

August 30, 2018

It may be one of the infamous AB tests

August 30, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Xanren

I think it is an AB test as I still have the health bars on my iOS app after a reinstall. Hopefully they take the health system away completely soon.

I have just downloaded the app from the US apple site and it has the Health Bar. I would like to get rid of it!

August 31, 2018

I would like to get rid of it!

If you don't like the "Health" feature, then you can "vote with your feet"

Switch to Duolingo's web version (www.duolingo.com) on your iOS device, because it .......

  • does not have the "Health" system and "gems"

  • will work in the Chrome or Firefox browser on your phone or tablet, if you have rather good Wifi (or LTE/4G with an Internet bundle)

  • you can choose a good teaching method:
mostly "typing each word" instead of mostly "clicking on predefined words (word banks)"

  • has access to the very useful sentence discussions

  • has grammar "Tips and notes" in lessons that introduce new grammar
.. Click on the light bulb next to the "Start" button
    .. picture: https://i.imgur.com/wWY1Fpf.png
    Exception:
There is a so-called A/B test in which some users have "Tips and notes" in the courses French and Spanish for English speakers in the iOS App

  • has the "Test out of individual skills" feature in the "crown levels" 0-4 instead of only in "crown level" 0.

If Duolingo is redirecting you from www.duolingo.com to their iOS app, then you can avoid this by completely removing Duolingo's iOS app from your device.

August 31, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Ginasem

I still have it too and my apps automatically update as soon as an update is there.

September 1, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/gatiquo

Me too I just checked and it took off some bars for mistakes. Really DL, don't you see how sleazy this is.

August 31, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/parizanourso

still have the bar. I won't renew my plus subscription due to this bar : I don't use the IOS application. You're very lucky ;-)

That is indeed great news! Thank you, Duo!

August 30, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sterkeste

From your messages it looks like not everybody has it I thought it was taken off for everyone because I’m in Facebook Duolingo groups and on most new screenshots it seemed that it was gone Hope it will be for the others soon after they realize that it’s better without (I’ve been doing many more lessons since)

August 31, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JudgeFromUranus

I completely agree. I'm not sure what metric statistics they were trying to achieve but the health bar was a complete pain and made language learning on the app a complete nightmare (as you've already stated). Good job Team Duo! Keep up the excellent work.

August 31, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/EpicRuler1414

I still have it. Hopefully I won’t have it for too long. Then we can finally be free :)

My wife hated the health bar, too. I was using Android and she was jealous how I could just keep going and didn't have to pay for health or redo the entire lesson. I ended up hacking her Kendle Fire to accept Duolingo and she stopped using the iOS version completely.

Since then, we are both using our Macbooks for Duolingo because it's so much easier to use the [option]-u (+a, o, or u) to make ä, ö, ü umlauts. And [option]-s to make ß. But, there's no health bar on the online version, either.

August 31, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/malfruemulo

It may be this A/B test (screenshot taken from my profile): I still have health, but I am running a very old version of the app (probably a year+ old) which I don't want to update (although not updating didn't stop me from getting health, so it may not stop me from one day losing it). I tried looking at your profile to compare, but I can't see your A/B test statuses for some reason. You do have "exempt_from_health":true, but I did too for a while before I was put on health (I was one of the last ones to get health), so I don't think that's what's responsible.

September 1, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Dreadlock.Dawnie

I stopped using the Duo app on my iphone (except for groups) because of the silly health bar.... Saw your post and gave it a little launch and I'm one of the lucky users with a little blue shield where the health bar used to be! Thanks for flagging that it had gone or I might have missed it! Now I can use the app until the test is over so that they know I like it!

September 1, 2018

From all the comments, it's not gone for everyone, I hope it is for you !

September 1, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Bloodchild121

Still waiting for it to go, it was a serious hinder to learning. And because of it 4 people I invited havent done a lesson since the heart system came and the Chatbots left. So hopefully they bring back the Chatbots

Really? They removed it? That's a good. I never liked it. It made me practice less. When I ran out of lives, I just stop. When I ran out of lives before I reached the daily quota, I just finish it on the desktop version.

September 1, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sterkeste

If you read the other comments, you'll see that it's not the case for everyone because it's apparently another A/B test

September 1, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sterkeste

Also not really related to my message but has any of you has testing out on every skill ? I just have it on level 0 ones and it’s been weeks since duolingo puts it in the app updates descriptions (even sent a mail today or yesterday about its availability)

August 30, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AdeleBushe

Testing out is only available at this time above level 0 with the website version of Duolingo

August 31, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sterkeste

They keep writing its availability in the updates description on the App Store though.. it’s been a while

August 31, 2018

You can also practice on the computer instead of the app. All your progress is saved automatically. And there's no health bar on the computer. I get frustrated with the health bar too sometimes but I only us the app when I don't have access to a computer and I make so much more progress that way

September 1, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sterkeste

I personally use my phone more than my computer

September 1, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/veeless

Ugh! I still have the infernal health bar system on my IOS version.

I won’t go into all the reasons it ruins Duolingo for me because other people have already stated the reasons this is a frustrating and useless feature.

I just wish I were one of the lucky ones who got it removed with the last update. The Duolingo gods don’t favor me. :(

September 1, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/FrenchByte

100th upvote! I agree, although they explain why they implemented health, I honestly don't think it's helpful. Making mistakes is OK, you learn from it more than you do from the hints.

Is it gone for the mobile app?

August 30, 2018

I still have my health bar - I spend so many gems getting my health back so I can continue my learning. It’s a good thing there is nothing else to spend them on

August 30, 2018

I never spent any gems but having to do 5 practice sessions to get them back was annoying

August 31, 2018

Weird I remember using it often for a few hours or less and I never saw the health bar mentioned. How much did you have to do in the app to activate it lol?

It was just a feature
