Yai, mayai reminds me of ei, which was the native way to say "egg" in English, before it was replaced with Old Norse's egg.
In Dutch an egg is still "ei"
First thing I thought of too (except I connected it to German Ei).
Anybody know if "mkate wa mayai" is indeed the standard term for "French toast"?
Seems it also refers to a kind of sponge cake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV-ynJir0bw
