I am native AmE. "Aircraft" is a more general and utilitarian term. See, for example: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/aircraft.
As the chart that VladaFu posted shows, "aircraft" is not used in the everyday context of air travel. For general air travel, "by plane" is the most common usage, with "by airplane" also fine but less commonly used.
