And what about "It lasts (for) a long time..." ? Is the problem the "It lasts" itself with this context, please?

Hmm. I can't say exactly why, but "lasts (for) a long time" just doesn't sound right in this context. Curiously, "Building a freeway lasts (for) a long time...." doesn't sound strange to me, but I'd say that "takes a long time" sounds better even there.
