Let's pretend West is 9 o'clock and North is 12 o'clock. If you are in the middle of the clock facing 9 (West), then on your right is 12 (North) and on your left is 6 (South) while behind you is 3 (East). So totally possible :) Cheers!

First off this sentence confused me and 2nd off, why do I need the article "the" here??
