how do i know whether to use 내다 or 나다? (Passive)

I'm talking about 내다/나다, when they have the meaning of "to come out, to occure", p.e. 생각이 나다 ("for an idea to come"), 땀이 나다 ("for sweat to come", to sweat) [i know those examples aren't conjugated] Is it just a rule to use the passive verb in those cases/examples? Is 내다 ever used as "to occure, to come out" etc? In what way would the meaning of the examples change, if i use 내다 instead of 나다? Or is that smth u just don't do?
