English learning Dutch
Hi I'm a English speaker learning Dutch. What pointers and tips can anyone give me to speed up the process and help me become fluent.
It is great that you found a study buddy. However, your goal of fluency will be difficult with DL and another native English speaker alone. My oldest son has been living in Japan for over ten years and has achieved a certain level of fluency. But he still struggles. So, managing your expectations is recommended; along with speaking with native speakers (preferably in the Netherlands).
I have been teaching myself dutch for about two months, at first, I picked up some Dutch since I have been travelling to the Netherlands quite a lot, I do have some Dutch friends helping me out. If you all would like I could make us a discord server and we could try help each other out with it? as that would be perfect as it has every essential ranging from Voice chat to photos & also typing.
I'll join, too. I can read most Dutch fairly proficiently, but I have trouble communicating my own words with it. lol Been looking for more interactive ways to practise my writing and speaking skills.
For me when learning other languages it helps to expose myself to a lot of it by listening to talk-radio, songs, television,YouTube etc in that language. Things that interest me so I am motivated to pay attention. You might not be able to understand everything at first but you get familiar with how it sounds and pick up new words along the way...
Hi, I am bilingual in both languages as I have a Dutch mother and an English father, I recommend that if you don't have the opportunity to speak with Dutch speakers then you should read. There is some really straightforward literature or even a short article in the newspaper (but it might depend on what newspaper you choose of course!) It's a good idea to listen to the radio or tv online as well. If you want to practise then you can always try and chat with me here, happy to help and I guess I know the challenges for English speakers with Dutch. I am here most days doing my best to improve my German anyway so I am easy to find.
Veel plezier met je Nederlands!
Hi! I'm English too and learning Dutch because my boyfriend is Dutch. I do find speaking to him in Dutch is the best way to practice because my reading comprehension is really good but my speaking and putting sentences together spontaneously is much harder and I find it difficult to practice that on here, so I'd say find someone fluent in Dutch to talk with :)
It would be easier to find someone that is Dutch but most really enjoy speaking English back to someone who knows English, most my friends that are Dutch will speak English to me even when they're around rather than their native tongue. Plus it is also finding someone willing to actually sit there and talk like you have with your boyfriend that makes it difficult haha.
so i just sit there watch Tv or play video games in dutch and try pretend i am talking to them which makes me look insane.
you can practice with me. that is, if you want to. i'm english too, it might help if i have someone to study with.
Sorry for the gap... my mother does not let me on on weekdays. and i don' use social media.
