One that is absolutely perfect for beginners learning Spanish is Will Ferrell's Casa de mi Padre http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1702425/. It can be quite funny at times, but it is incredibly accessible and easy to follow along to with. It also made me wonder if Ferrell is fluent in Spanish because he does very well with the pronunciation.

Excellent recommendation. It is my understanding that Will Ferrell is not fluent at all, which makes it all the more funny.

Che: Part One and Part Two are also good films for this. Regardless of your politics, his story is very interesting. The films portray his years of notoriety during (part one) and after (part two) la revolución.

On a much lighter and slightly different note, I've been watching some U.S. sitcoms in Spanish lately. The Seinfeld Spanish dubs seem to be pretty good, and I've also been watching some Arrested Development in Spanish, although only my season 3 discs include Spanish dubs.

Where do you find U.S. sitcoms in Spanish? Do you have them on DVD with a Spanish track, or online? Movies are really long and wear me out. I think a sitcom might be just my speed right now, lol.

I'm not aware of any streaming options with Spanish audio available where I am (in the U.S.), but I haven't really looked that hard. I've got Arrested Development on DVD, and I have a friend that has all of Seinfeld on DVD, so I borrow his. It's not a sitcom, but I also have tried watching Game of Thrones in Spanish (blu-ray), but I find it a bit harder to follow.

Thanks for the reminder, tinnmel, of this great way to improve your listening skills. You might find some of the films listed under their English titles. I just glanced at a couple and found "The Motorcycle Diaries" and "Pan's Labyrinth" on Netflix. They are in Spanish and have English (and sometimes French) subtitles.

You really win the learner's lottery when you find Spanish language movies with Spanish captions. (If you have a sense of humor and a love of hyperbole, you could also try watching Spanish language telenovelas, with or without captions.)

Arthurva, I found these favorites of mine online, although they don't have captions:

La Hija del Mariachi http://www.mundofox.com/videos/la-hija-del-mariachi-ep-1-18839

Doña Barbara http://msnlatino.telemundo.com/novelas/dona_barbara/video/capitulo-1-1-5/acddb6d4-0538-45b8-a78b-b32dc6b6f6e6

La Reina del Sur http://msnlatino.telemundo.com/novelas/la_reina_del_sur/video/la-reina-del-sur-capitulo-1-1-4-11-11-13/65229545-7366-4292-b297-9075462c1a41

At Hulu.com, you can browse for "Latino" shows and find a number of telenovelas, many with Spanish captions. For example, this episode of a cute show called "De que te quiero, te quiero":

http://www.hulu.com/watch/630193

The websites I gave you are all legitimate ones run by the networks. There are a bunch of pirate sites out there, but I'd avoid them, if I were you. They are pretty buggy.

¡Suerte!

You can easily find subtitles in Spanish for almost any movie. It is also pretty easy with a bit of googling to learn how to hardcode subtitles in movies (if you use your ps3 as a media server, you'll have to).

There are also some sites that have tv shows with Spanish subtitles, dubbed into Spanish, or in Spanish with Spanish subtitles.

Good movies on that list (at least the ones I've seen). We watched El hijo de la novia in a class I taught, and even though the thick Argentine accents were a little tough for them, the students seemed to really like it. Another great one with Norma Aleandro is La historia oficial (The Official Story), which looks to be available on Netflix for streaming.

Thanks for this!

I loved 'Motorcycle Diaries' - 'Diarios de Motocicleta; - both parts (it comes in two parts - Che's early life and as a revolutionary in Cuba). Especially the first one is fairly easy and well worth the watching for any reason! Great views of Argentina, Peru and other South American countries. The second one is quite different, but also great watching! It is mostly in Cuba. Mine had sub-titles which made it really easy.

I don't know the other movies given in the list but have taken a note of them - will be looking out for them. {Edit: Ah I see they have been found on-line with links given above. Very good!}

Any Trekkies out there? The whole set of 'Star Trek' episodes (all seven seasons) are dubbed in Spanish! This is great watching because each episode stands alone, and has great stories. I was able to buy this for a song some years back.

There is a film from Spain called 'Jamon Jamon' which is really easy watching - the film is a bit silly but its really great fun and good for a laugh - a Spanish laugh. (Edit: Thanks Gen912 ... it is not from Argentina - my mistake)

Isn't "Jamón, Jamón" from Spain? It contains a lot of cultural references proper to that country - bullfighting, ham (amongst other Spanish food references), the changing status of masculinity and sexuality in a post-Franquist society... It's a very good movie!

Great movie! And it is on Netflix. It is good to watch because--besides being an awesome flick--the dialogue is done in a noir-ish style with short, direct sentences. It makes it easier to understand for relatively new listeners (like me).

I don´t know if this serie is the best to learn Spanish , but it´s very funny and the chapters are short (7-8 min)

It´s a serie that started on the internet in Spain some years ago and after that a TV channel bought it. You can find all the chapters on Youtube. Have fun !!

It also helps if there were English subtitles so you can associate the words in a foreign language (in this case, Spanish) to English (or whatever language you speak). After a while, you won't need subtitles to understand the movie, and coming from an auditory learner, I can say it really works.

I've recently seen a good one: El crack (1980). It has some disturbing moments concerning continuity, but the characters are more important in this one. Be aware that there is another one called alike from the late 90s or 00s, but it is a completely different one.

Los lunes al sol is an awesome movie too, if you are into romances Volver a Gijón is quite nice as well

Hello guys, my name is Adán Ayala, I am a Spanish Teacher from Mexico. I have a lot of experience using media and TV shows (much better than soap operas) as a form of immersion. They can be extremely productive as long as you know how to work and get the most out of them. I realized that my students after finishing their methods and programs in our school developed only some writing and limited speaking skills, and that is very far from being fluent. Most of them didn´t have many opportunities to practice or someone with whom to practice. Part of the problem was their lack of vocabulary, a small understanding of slang and idioms and very little training on their listening comprehension. I must say that the real challenge for me as a teacher was to find good content with subtitles and transcriptions to work and help the students analyze in a controlled class setting. But in the last years, some big networks and streaming services have invested more in Latin American and Spanish productions which is awesome, and it gives us great material to learn. Their topics and contents are closer to the global culture and interests than the traditional so-called "telenovelas". Please send me a message if anyone of you is interested in conversational classes using this method or you can contact me at adan@spanishlive.online or visit my website on http://spanishlive.online/
