PSLE is an examination taken by ALL Primary 6, or Grade 6, or 12-year-old students in Singapore. You can choose the language to take for the exam and one of them is Malay. More info can be found here:

I was wondering if I could use Duolingo to brush up on my Malay as the exam is on Monday, 1 October. Any advice on how Duolingo could help for the Malay PSLE examination? I know that they teach INDONESIAN here, but I want to learn Malay. Questions:

  1. Is Indonesian close enough to Malay that the exam markers can understand my answers?

  2. With a knowledge of Indonesian, can I communicate in a Malay-speaking situation?

  3. Are there differences in vocabulary? I know that there ARE differences in pronunciation, but the vocab is important too.

Any advice on how Duolingo could help for the Malay PSLE examination?

  1. Malay speaker can understand Bahasa, but not vice versa.
  2. Yeah? just ask them the meaning if you don't know what the words mean. It happens normally here too since bahasa is always mixed with the local languages of the speakers AND the slang is always evolved (I would call it a meme word though since it is not used anymore or is replaced with a new meme word after a period of time, usually 3 months or so)
  3. Of course. For example, kereta is car in Malay while kereta is train in Bahasa.
