Seeing the forest thru the trees

This is a question (not a complaint) about the various French trees. I am about half way through the original French 78 node tree. When I heard about the 96 node volunteer tree, I thought it sounded exciting, and patiently waited for it. Of course it never arrived. Now I have started hearing about new longer trees of all sorts appearing overnight. However, my original 78 “old tree” remains.

So I decided to start signing into Duolingo as a new user multiple times, retaking the placement test, and seeing what the alternative trees looked like. My goal is to find a tree that has the assets of my current old one, but with more in-depth work in some weak areas. I ran this little experiment 5 times.

For 3 out of the 5, I ended up with the 120 (or so) node tree, which overlaps significantly with my 78 tree except it has a lot more nodes. Some of them appear to be from the Volunteer tree 3 — for example lessons on weather, etc. Also there were a few quirky points, e.g. an early node for animals was removed but animals2 and animals3 is now available down the tree. (I would miss those cute lessons on sharks and dolphins eating meals!).

For 1 out of the 5 attempts, I got what I assume is a Pearson tree. That was just terrible. The lessons felt like a middle school French lessons, they were less demanding grammatically, and appeared to more colloquially oriented. Also each individual lesson was much shorter, and the program was divided into parts (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3...) like a text book.

For 1 out of the 5 I got another tree about 120 nodes, but it had less overlap with my original 78 tree, and the order seemed scrambled.

So my question is: if I keep doing this, can I ever get to the 96 node volunteer tree? (Is that currently being given out to new users?).

My goal is to get to a longer tree that is like my 78 one, which I see as being organized by semantics and grammar, about equally weighted. I am not so interested in doing a course organized by conversational themes (e.g. how to order at a restaurant, how talk to concierge at a hotel, etc.).

For those of you who have the “extended” 120 node tree (not the conversationally oriented Pearson one), aside from the issue of losing crowns, what do you think of it?

I really don’t care about losing crowns, btw — so I am fine starting over with a new user name if it would offer me the optimal tree.

As far as I know, the 96 skill volunteer tree isn't being offered to new users anymore.

I am curious as to why this is no longer offered.

Thanks — that is basically what I wanted to know. I hope they correct the errors in the 120 node tree so it will be more viable. Until then I will stay with the old V2 tree until the duo tree-gods deem otherwise.

I guess all trees will eventually update and be exactly the same.

Just like Mileni244 said, eventually all users will be getting the one "chosen" tree that the devs decide is the best (by what considerations I'm not sure), so making many accounts would eventually be pointless as they will all "converge" to the same tree at the end... Your research is interesting though, I was not aware there are so many different trees being offered simultaneously... I really hope they end up keeping a good one...

I realize that eventually they will all converge on the same tree. But I won’t be always working through the French tree — I am doing that now. If a year from now they have converged, I may be back to Spanish by then, or onto another program to keep up with French.

Also to clarify I am not keeping all these accounts. You can go thru placement testing and see a tree WITHOUT forming an account. I am trying to find an account that has the optimal tree for me to use...now.

That makes more sense indeed, didn't realize you could see the tree before creating an account... I wonder how long it would take the devs to "choose" the one tree that "wins", if it really is a few months or a year, looking for the tree you like best is a good idea...
