A more natural word order in English would be "long and cold."

It appears to be more common so we will accept it in translations.

Winters here are long and cold. This is rather like the 'skin and bone' example. 'long and cold' sounds much more like normal (British) English usage that cold and long. I suspect it's because of the more definite consonant ending of 'cold'.
