“in the plate” or “on the plate”

I am learning the duolingo English course. One sentence is The forks are on the plates. and the other one is I have her fork in my plate.. What's the difference between "In the plate" and "on the plate"?

Thanks

Jake

For me "on the plate" makes a lot more sense but it might differ in English speaking regions. I'm in Texas, US. "in the dish" makes me think it is an ingredient in the food/recipe. "Dish" can be another word for "plate". But I have never noticed someone using "in the plate" in that way.

Thanks, I think I should always use on the plate, at least it is not wrong.

因为盘子是平的,a fork is "on the plate". 你不可以把叉子放在盘子的里面 ("in the plate"). 不过, 你可以说 "a fork is in the bowl", 因为你可以把东西放在碗的里面. (我同rocko2012同意. 不同的地方有不同的说法.)
