I can't imagine that people would address their grandmothers as "maternal grandmother"! Sheesh! Also, in the previous sentence, which was about a maternal aunt, just "aunt" was accepted as correct!

Yeah, we wouldn't say that in English, but it's good to know the difference. You'd say "shimasaní" to your mother's mother, but never to your father's mother.

I call my half-Swedish grandmother farmor, which means "father mother", so the father's mother. It's just as natural to say this as grandma or something similar.
