Goodbye 1,358-Day Streak. I Will Miss You!

Hello, fellow language learners!

As the title says, I lost my 1,358-day streak. Nope, it's not that I forgot to do a streak freeze or anything like that. I was just so busy and stressed the past few days that it slipped my mind.

While I will miss my streak, and was really proud of it, I won't spend money to repair my steak. While sad, it feels nice not having a number tied to me and not having to think about it. And yes, as many people say, it's what you learned that counts.

To those working on your steaks though, all the power to you! For me, I like to travel, so part of my "Duolingo adventure" is finding wifi places to do at least one lesson a day. I've seen many posts saying how worried they are that they may not be in a wifi spot when they go on vacation, but you will be surprised by how many places do have wifi! And in case you're curious, I've traveled to France, Italy, London, Québec province, around America, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, South Korea, and others, and I did manage to find a wifi spot. Hint: Find a cafe, as that's your best bet.

Anyways, I wish you all the best in your language learning!

NtateNarin, former 1,358-day streak holder. :-)

*** Edit/Update: Thank you all so much for your kind words! The question that seems to come up the most is if I will do another streak. I will, but that's because I pretty much use Duolingo daily. I won't be concentrating on any long streaks though and may do what some of you do and just "reset" my steak after maybe 100 days so I won't be addicted to a huge streak. Also, I'm so happy Duome.eu will save my streak as proof I went so high.

I love the reaction of my family. They were so shocked and kept asking me to somehow save my streak, especially since they were so amazed I did it for more than 100 days. Ah well, in the end, I still did more than 3 years, so that is enough. :-)

I am so sorry. The streak is like the ring of power (LOR) and you are now free. There should be a feature in Duolingo showing each person's longest streak, but that is not happening. If I were you I would repair it, but I think a 1,358 streak is impressive and it shows your commitment to Duolingo. The most important thing is what you learn.

"Repairing" a streak means that if you miss a day, Duolingo send you a notification that you can "repair it" by paying some amount of money (~$5?). I don't know if this offer only appears after a certain number of days. I got the offer when I lost a ~60 day streak. I didn't pay the money (since I don't really care that much), but it'd be interesting to know how many users do repair their streaks.

Thanks, good to know. I lost 73 Streaks too . I had no internet access to 3 days and they were gone. I didn't care much about them. They don't mean much to me but users here seem to obsessively sensible with them.

That is unless science finds a way to reach immortality, perhaps by transferring the content of our brains onto some sort of computer that doesn't decay the same way organic material does. But by that time we'll probably also have some google translate function planted in our brains making the streak obsolete, so I guess you're right.

Enjoy the freedom! Being tied to a streak number turned out to be a burden for me. So a while back, I personally declared my independence. I aimed a 50 days, and then after each 50 day streak, I would intentionally skip a day; and start again at 1.

Hi Narin,

don't be afraid.

The SHOF Alumni https://duome.eu/alumni section won't forget you and your long streak too quickly :-)

Wow, about the double streak of what I have right now; and even that was such a long way for doing it for almost two years; I won't finish my first PT reverse tree in time (there was an EN-PT tree update to 91 skills in June 2018, but this surely alone is no excuse) :(

I can't think of too many things in my life over the past years which I had focused so much on like this daily challenge to push forward and constantly review language stuff even it maybe only has been for 15-30 minutes or less on some days; and there is lots of room to refine my concepts and further improve the whole language learning experience!

I am curious to see how much time it will cost me over the next years to:

  • [complete PT-DE reverse tree]
  • start and finish newest PT-EN reverse tree (it got updated, jippie, but not mine)
  • break through PT->SP / PT->FR + EN-SP, EN-FR courses
  • do laddering courses SP->PT / FR->PT / SP->FR / FR->SP

8 ladderings trees for just two more languages + 1-2 reverses:
Sounds more like a 5-10+ years project, not a "next two years goal" to me....HAHA?!

BTW: My first EN-PT tree with 69 skills took me ~1 year.

..(...)..

If I ever had the time or muscle energy to do water sports like Wakeboarding or Kitesurfing on that constant level and to train new tricks on a daily basis, well, then I believe I could really push forward ;)

Hopefully one day, I find the right opportunity incl. IT jobs/contracts to go for ~3-5 months abroad and finally leave our nasty European/German winter behind me and bring even more watersports into my own life!

Was nice seeing you writing here and there on the discussion forums!

..(...)..

Q: Any new plans / courses for you which may go along well with your restarted streak?

Best regards / Viele Grüße aus Deutschland

It's a good time for me to read this ... I've managed to maintain my streak during some long (2-3 month) overseas travel periods over the last few years - but that was because I was travelling in countries where WiFi was readily available almost every day. Streak Freezes helped out a few times too. :-)

However, in a few weeks I'll be travelling in parts of SE Asia. While WiFi will generally be available where I'm going, there will be a couple of occasions where I'll be off the beaten track for a few days and there's a good chance I'll lose my 1600+ day streak.

So, thank you for your post, NtateNarin ... It will help me keep things in perspective!!

Sorry you lost the streak, but just wanted to let you know that when you posted the item about "secretly understanding the language" and you got hundreds of likes and comments, I found that much more impressive than your streak anyway. Keeping others engaged and interested makes your contributions more important than just having the numbers. After all, I have a streak on Candy Crush and Cooking Fever too, but I understand that nobody cares about those!

I can understand you very well! Streak is something that motivates you to practice every day. But it is not a real motivation, all these are in our mind. If you find out that after a so long time you have learned something more in the language (s) This is a real satisfaction and the real reward. So from now on you can arrange your learning according your wishes, and in a way you are free now, and to be free is a nice feeling! :-)

I share your views. It’s not the end of the world for me to have lost my initial streak which was over a year, though, I was saddened by the thought initially. Like you, I got caught up in other things and was off probably by 1-2 hours from continuing the streak but it wasn’t worth paying for the repair. I know how long I’ve continuously worked on learning Polish. I know what progress I’ve made and I know what goals I have in mind. I’m content with that. Thanks for sharing your experience. All the best to you.

We are not defined by our difficulties, but how we respond to them. I hope you are still motivated to continue learning different languages, I think some people would quit after their streak is gone.

My 270 streak ended just 3 days ago, by something I was 100% sure about that it was not my mistake but an error. I bought the streak freezer but it didn't worked out.

I deleted my level 21 Hebrew process and start now all over again, start to find new ways to improve my learning and make it also a lot more efficient. I believe strongly that people can learn a language quicker with changes in their way of learning. At the end you are learning a language just for yourself and not to impress people by a day-streak or the EXP you have.
