Dear People Learning German

Please be aware that the correct way to replace ä, ö, ü, ß is turning them into ae, oe, ue, and ss, not just taking the dots away or typing "B".
Otherwise, you can get things like,

"Das Wetter ist sehr schwül heute." = The weather is very hot and humid today.

"Das Wetter ist sehr schwul heute." = The weather is very gay today.

well know I know how to call the weather gay

Wow! I tried these letter substitutions in the German course and they are counted as correct! Awesome! In what everyday situations in Germany might someone use the letter substitutions instead of the accent marks? Is this for if someone's computer/phone won't do accent marks? Is it more acceptable to use one method or the other?

These substitutions are correct and everyone understands them, but they are usually only used when ä,ö,ü,ß are not available for some reason (f.e. not supported by the used font).

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Colin716109

they are mostly used in wording puzzles so if you have a word that says it is 7 letters long it could very well be schwuel (insted of the 6 letter word schwül)

It's just the correct way. The main purpose from our perspective today is that it keeps the pronunciation of A/O/U clearly defined. Other than when Ä/Ö/Ü aren't available, you don't need them. Yes, our rules are pretty strict there. We even added a capital version of ß, which I don't know when to use outside of spamming caps lock. because I guess we can't have a letter that has only one version, even if ß is never, ever used capitalised in normal German, because it only appears in the middle or end of words, never at the beginning. I've always used this method for dealing with my keyboard/vowels with umlauts, but about 50% of the time Duo (while marking me correct) says I have a typo. Hmm. Should I flag that for them when it happens, do you think?

Also, I'm very new to using Duo, and I just dove into it about a month ago. I see mentions of tools and notes, but for the life of me I can't find them. I've hit every single icon available. Koennen Sie mir helfen? (I'm using an Android tablet, if that makes any difference.)

On the Mac OS it is extremely easy to install the German keyboard and then to switch to and out of it. I always use the native language keyboard whenever I type in any language.

October 9, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/IchhasseMuecken

It's not difficult regardless of OS, really. The problem is that your physical keyboard still shows your usual layout, so most of the time people don't use other layouts.

October 9, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeterPan173079

It is, but it has been added fairly recently. So it doesn't hurt to bring this to the attention of the users who already proceeded past that level.

Wait, there are notes? Where are they? I always was completely against Duolingo bc it didn't have any notes...

I mean, now I am not so against, cuz I found out about groups, labs, and dicussions... but still, notes are crucial

I know it isn't quite the gist of the post, but there are keystroke short cuts for the mac that work for each of these.

For umlauts, start the umlaut command with opt+u then immediately type your vowel. For instance, first opt+u, then a = ä

If you want to capitalize it, first opt+u, then shift+your letter (the normal capitalization strokes) opt+u, then A = Ä

And so on.

For the szett, (ess-tzett), it's opt+s = ß

On mobiles, hold the letter down slightly and a small universe of accents and effects on that letter come up. Slide your figure to the one you want.

Took me a while to find all this out.

October 9, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lululipes

Opt = control, right?

October 11, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/david3dd

No, on an Apple keyboard, the "Option" is key near the Control key though.

If using a mobile device, simply install the keyboard of your target language in your phone settings and switch to it in the Duolingo app. The German keyboard has the Umlauts in it. If you are learning Spanish and struggle with the ñ, than simply use the Spanish keyboard. ✌️

On Tiny Cards, I typed "ss" for süß, and it said "incorrect", but I typed "s" the next time, and it was correct. Isn't Tiny Cards the same folks that bring us Duolingo??

October 10, 2018

Be very then, and maybe report it. "Süs" is incorrect.

Of course it is not correct. But TC probably interpreted it as a typo, because only one letter was wrong (s instead of ß) (at least that is what Duolingo would do), whereas from ss to ß it is an error comprising two letters.

It would be nice if Duolingo could autocorrect ae to ä instantly as you type. Would save me jumping to click the mouse all the time.

But there are (rare) words where you need "ae" ...

August 6, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DerekHarkn

Maybe, but Duolingo knows what we are supposed to be typing. This isn't free writing. On the rare occasions when the correct answer(s) contains ae, the autocorrect could be disabled.

August 6, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DerekHarkn

I have set up an extension on my browser to create some shortcut keys to help with this. I used = as the shortcut key because it never normally appears mid-word and = on my keyboard is physically close to where the ß key is on a German keyboard. Now, if I type Ma=dchen, my computer corrects it to Mädchen, if I type scho=n it will correct to schön, Stras=e it becomes Straße, and so on. I set the autocorrect to not operate if there is a delay of more the 1 second between the two keys so I can still write a=2+b for math if I want. This way I can type all the accents without taking my hands away from the keyboard.
