Test out charges

Hi Does anyone else out there think having to pay 400 gems to skip a level is not right. I am a subscriber and pay £7.99 a month which is more than enough and if I want to test out of a level it should be free. There are so many lessons in each level now and it takes forever to progress I believe this not helpful in learning new skills. I had over 16,000 gems and in only a few days of testing out from level two to three I am down to less than 10,000. I know the gems are not very useful so I don’t mind using them up. Maybe this is a ploy to get you to buy more gems, well in my case they are very much mistaken. I think this is a disgrace to subscribers there are not many advantages of being a member so I think that I will cancel my subscription and go back to seeing adverts. Maybe if we can get this topic back to the people who write this app they might do something about it. Thank you for reading my post. Denese

I think this is new on the iOS platform. The last time I tried the test out (skip) it was not available at all for skill levels 2 and above.

I now use the web site for testing out and I hope they don’t implement the same on the browser platform.

The Android app has no gems :-) :-)

"A/B skill crown level test-out" is available as an A/B test for some (not all) Android users.

As a test-out option on the mobile app with tapping word banks (too many obvious hints!) is not a very good design for several reasons anyways, you definitely should stick, as pointed out by Psionpete, to the web portal.

With the Duome /test URL links you can basically test-out skills even if you are not in the right A/B group for the web!

For skill test-outs you better use typing (with a hardware keyboard), not tapping.

I have to admit that I failed the Spanish intro placement test two times on the web portal, but passed it on the Android app with tapping up to level 9 last year.

I hadn't studied Spanish but could guess a bit here and there (listening + typing would not have been really possible at this stage) as I was learning Portuguese for one year.

Why do plus subscribers have to pay for anything? I used to take the tests to pass out of different levels, and now I'm being asked to pay. This should be a perk for subscribers. I used web version in past to test out (iOS) but now it's unavailable.

Hi I am glad you agree with me. I have sent an email direct to Duolingo so they may do something. Just to let you know someone else said use the web which I have just done and was able to test out. Maybe if I keep using it they will stop it. Try again to test out maybe working again for you.

Basically, all skill test-outs are available even you might be now in the wrong A/B group:

I just noticed something. I recently tested out of enough levels/skills to reach Level 25 in German (~30,000 XP). Along the way I did have to pay 400 gems to test out each level per skill.

Once I reached my Level 25 milestone in German, I took a couple weeks break from it. I started back at it today as I’m obsessed with completing all levels for each topic, so I began testing out again... However, now I’m not being charged any gems at all — it’s free now!

I wonder if once you reach Level 25, is the paywall lifted?

I have a "free" account and I've never had to "pay" gems. I have 79k+ XP in Spanish and I recently had to start "paying" 5 gems per test out for one lesson. I can no longer test out of a whole section either, like I have done in the past. Something changed.
