The actual thing called food is "meaʻai." The action of eating is "ʻai".
Food = mea ‘ai
Eat = ‘ai
Aloha kākou~~. Be careful those who are saying only “mea ʻai” = food. Remember that in classical Hawaii ʻai refered to starchy foods but more specifically poi. So this is still correct in the Hawaiian sense.
