question Chinese

Hi, I'm learning Chinese for a few weeks now. I have a question about the character 李. If I am right, it has two meanings: Li (as a surname) and li (I don't now the meaning yet), but my question is, how do you know as which of the two you need to translate it?

I hope someone can help me with this.

Greetings, Bente

Besides a surname, it can also mean "plum" but it usually compounds with 子 for being used in that sense. To tell which meaning it takes, you need to know the context. Like the English word "park" , without a context, how can you tell which meaning it is supposed to take?
