Portuguese Dialectal Variations in Video Games and Pop Culture

Hello Duolingo Community!

I am a linguist working in facial animation for video games and I was wondering about Portuguese dialectal variations (broad term) in video games.

To all the Brazilian and Portuguese gamers out there, could you tell me a little bit more about the Portuguese dialects used in video games?

Let me tell you where I am getting at: so for example, in English, the bad guy often speaks British English, and the hero often speaks American English. On the other hand, in French, standard French tends to be used for all characters .

How is it Brazil and Portugal (and other Lusophone countries)? - Is it the case that the games are localised in Brazilian Portuguese and (Portugal) Portuguese? (like two different versions for each country) - If a specific version is made for Brazil, is there any dialectal variations within the game (like some characters speaking Paulista or the dialect from Rio, etc) - Is there a mixed version of Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese? - Could you give me examples of games?

Sorry for the amount of questions, and most importantly thanks for your time!

If I could make a suggestion, you would probably get more answers if you moved your post to the "Portuguese from English" forum (it is currently in the "Portuguese from French" subforum). There is a guide on how to do it here: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/16609773/Guide-How-to-move-a-post

As to your question, I'm not a gamer myself but from gameplays I've watched before, I'd say Brazil definitely gets its own version (I'm not sure about Portugal), and it's almost always based on the standard Paulista accent (the one used here at Duolingo), with some bits of Carioca (Rio de Janeiro) here and there (in Spider-Man for PS4, for example, I can hear a hint of Carioca in Yuri Watanabe, but most other characters speak like Paulistas). Even in games like Overwatch, where characters come from different places, we usually get a mix of those two accents for everyone.

Hi Australis,

Thanks a lot for your answer! I will follow your advice and will repost in the Portuguese from English forum.
