Practice exercises not balanced
I finished all 5 levels of the French tree. I was quite content with the exercises getting more difficult with increasing levels. I was asked to translate to French for more than half of the exercises. Having finished the 5 levels, I was looking forward to keep working with the overall practice button (or practice for individual exercises). However there is a serious problem. On average, 80% of the exercises ask me to translate to English. Furthermore, there are lots of repeated sentences. Almost all practice sessions have the format of >15 French --> English questions in the beginning (mixed with a few listening questions), followed by 4-5 English --> French questions. I find this completely useless and a loss of time. How can I strengthen my French skills if I am constantly asked to write in English?
There was a very good ~65-35% French-English balance in the actual exercises. I strongly suggest the Duolingo team to apply this balance to the practice exercises as well if they want these to be worthwhile.
I would point not only repetition of sentences, but also funny and useless expressions. There were even posts with jokes on communication using Duolingo sentences in a real life. Nothing changed. But we also have to admit, that this free-of-charge language learning site is mostly based on a good will and efforts of volunteers, and I assume not all of them are professionals. So I accept these lessons as a game and addition to other learning resources.
I completely agree and appreciate what the Duolingo team has offered us so far. My post is meant as a suggestion to improve the current state of practice. Given what they have achieved, this improvement should not be so hard, yet would benefit people so much.

According to the lots of complaints about the courses made by Duolingo's paid staff, most of the courses made by volunteers are better than the courses made by Duolingo's paid staff.
.... but also funny and useless expressions .....
Mostly dictated by the teaching methods, developed by Duolingo's paid staff.
Thank you, it is possible, but this is hard to verify. No signatures and no names with credentials in the lessons :). If it is true, that volunteers bring better material than a paid staff, then this has to be discussed and solved within management of Duolingo, as in any other project team.
Tbh i think "funny and useless expressions" are actually alright. After all, they're teaching you to recognize the structure of the language and the words used. If you just want to memorize a few useful phrases, buy a phrasebook.
There was a thread posted some time ago, that skills on L5 crown level go back to the beginner stage in practice mode.
I am not really impressed with L4+L5 crown levels for my first four Portuguese skills, neither for single lessons (crown sessions) nor practice/skill re-strengten exercises (incl. timed)!
I find the practice button tends to ask me a lot of similar questions, e.g. i'll just get a bunch of past tense questions in succession, or a bunch of questions about colours, when i would prefer a mix of different tenses and topics. It also feels like i either get a run of very easy questions or a run of harder ones, when again, i'd prefer a mix of varying complexity.
Your thread would fit much better in the Troubleshooting(English) forum....or Duolingo(English) if you declare it as a [CHANGE-REQUEST].
It's improving all the time - when I started there was some really pervy stuff in the French course - "La serveuse est completement nue" was one I screen shotted.
