its not saying 'a new pant'. so why 'un' is required here ?

"Pants" is singular in French. We say "un pantalon". That's why "un" is required here.

The alternative correct answer is "Elle a de nouveaux pantalons." Why "de" in that case? And would either of the two answers be more common?
