Incubator Stories: Meet FrankySka :)
Introducing a new series in the forum where we share a little about the people behind the Incubator :) The Duolingo Incubator lets bilingual community members passionate about languages volunteer their time to build new Duolingo courses. You can check it out here: http://www.incubator.duolingo.com.
So, let's start! Meet FrankySka who you might already know as a community moderator in the forums. She also volunteers her time to help build the German for Spanish speakers course (which is just about ready to go into beta!). We asked a few questions, and here is what she said :)
Where do you currently call home? New York City
What do you do? Any special hobbies or interests? I'm a researcher studying the neural foundations of memory. I'm also really into hardcore punk.
What languages do you know? German, English, Spanish and French. I learned Latin at school, but let’s just say that did not end well. Hoping to learn Dutch and Irish on Duolingo soon!
What's in your toolkit for translating on the Incubator? Good music or Netflix for background noise. Also, http://www.duden.de, because I keep on forgetting how to spell superlonggermanwords. I don’t envy you German learners!
When do you translate on the Incubator? Pretty much whenever I find time. A few sentences in the morning and during my lunch break, but most of it at night when I should be sleeping.
Anything else you'd like to share with the community? I have come to realize I am addicted to Duolingo. If anyone wants to join me in founding a self-help group, please post on my stream.

thanks alot, I dont have words for to thank the big help that people as you give us. I hope that the certification in duoling to come soon. this give opportunities to a lot of people.
It's a struggle to not get addicted to Duolingo. When I don't have the tab open, it beckons me.
I have also struggled with the Duolingo addiction. I have found that work is the only thing that can destroy my resolve to use duolingo every day. What I really need is for Duolingo to have some feature where it does my work for me, so that I can do more Duolingo instead. Is this in the pipeline?
This was a great read! The contributors put so much time into the courses its nice to get to know the people behind them-great idea.
I was wondering if duolingo has ever considered giving the users the ability to donate a coffee or beer to the guys who contribute? I know duolingos core idealology is learning should be free, but it would be nice to give something back to the people who do this work for free... Possibly even a flattr button... just a thought.
"I'm also really into hardcore punk."... and she knows Spanish.
That's enough! <3
Carl0s_ you seem to have learned the "bonus" skills on Duolingo very well ;-)
Fiskales Ad-Hok and Los Miserables (Both are from my country). 2 minutos, Shaila, and I don't remember what else. I will google it up and I will let you know.
Just so you know (since I saw you say a few weeks ago you were open to corrections), you wouldn't need the word "up" along with "Google" when you use it as a verb. So you "look up something", but you "Google something" with no accompanying preposition. Cheers!
I know it. It is just a funny-spoken expression that some natives use. I found it "funny" and I decided to use it as well, even in gramatically is not correct.
Thanks for the correction anyway :-)
Congratulations, FrankySka! Good to know more about you. Talking of addiction, I am suffering from its over dosage and the fault entirely lies with Duolingo - the addicting language-learning-platform :)
I stayed on it all day (literally) one day last week...my eyes were so dry. This is unhealthy...Ayudarme. ;)
Don't worry, there are many senses to navigate with. ;) (And all will be consumed by Duolingo eventually. MWAHAHAHAAAA!!)
Wow! :D It was so nice to get to know FrankySka better! Thank you for all your help in the incubator and all your moderator help! You are amazing!
is that a christmas monkey Usagi? ;-) IT IS FINALLY SUMMER!!!!! High five!!!
A round of applause for FrankySka! the crowd goes wild
Thank you for your hard word and dedication. :-)
Hi FrankySka, it's nice to get to know you better! :) Glad to see another biologist :P And you speak quite a few languages! ;)
Good luck on your course!! :D
Necesitamos ir rehab, pero hablo no, no, no. Rehab for Duolingo. I think we all need it.
Also, your course is almost finished I've noticed. Good luck with the final stretch!
Hi FrankySka, Great this! I have been following you for a good time now and also keep competing with you ... but you are still some 7000 XT ahead of me! I have also been aware of you as a moderator - great ... you are good stuff!
Awesome, you study neurobiology/neuroscience? That is just great among the other things!
Edit: Would be interesting on what kind of level of memory learning we ("you") are dealing here: cellular/molecular level even?
Will be done as well :-) As far as I know, all courses get reversed at some point, but we need to get this one into beta, and than in phase 3 (or reasonably stable in beta) first!
Rumor has it that it is your special day today. Happy Birthday FrankySka!
And you have another milestone coming up in 15 days :)
Perks up and snags my cello. Squeaks out "Happy B-day" and it's sincere but aweful.
