English for Arabic speakers is now in beta!

We're excited to share that English for Arabic speakers is now in beta! Thank you to GunnyTunes, NadaShokry and Damascene for all of their contributions to this course. Congratulations!

Getting this course ready for beta also involved tremendous effort from Duolingo's team. We needed to redesign the entire site, so that this right to left language would work. As with all beta courses that involve changes like this and have new sentences, you may encounter some bugs or errors while going through the lessons. Please report them to us. By doing the course and reporting errors you'll be helping improve English for Arabic speakers for future learners.

A huge congrats to everyone involved!

Wow, great achievement. And now, when the right to left writing puzzle is solved, can we hope to see Hebrew in the incubator? Obviously it is not as popular as Arabic, but why not :)

+1 This will hopefully pave the way for Arabic for Hebrew speakers, and bring some peace to the region.

Let's not forget about Hebrew for Arabic speakers! We want to make inroads on both sides, do we not?

Cool! I'm going to try it soon. So now that the alphabet and right to left script is up and running, would it be possible to see Persian in the near future? I can definitely help with that but we need some supporters first though.

Is it Persian or Farsi? I get confused.

May 9, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Pleurocystites

Use Persian. Link

(Although I usually wind up tacking on a '/Farsi')

Relevant quote:

The Academy of the Persian Language and Literature (Farhangestan) in Tehran has also delivered a pronouncement on this matter and rejected any usage of the word "Farsi" instead of Persian/Persa/Persane/Persisch in the Western languages. The first paragraph of the pronouncement states: "PERSIAN has been used in a variety of publications including cultural, scientific and diplomatic documents for centuries and, therefore, it connotes a very significant historical and cultural meaning. Hence, changing 'Persian' to 'Farsi' is to negate this established important precedence. Changing 'Persian' to 'Farsi' may give the impression that it is a new language, and this may well be the intention of some Farsi users..."

Just finished my first lesson. :) Getting used to the right to left text fields for English, too. That's the only interface aspect I would try to improve right now. When Arabic students write in English, the text should come out left-justified. That will make their typing more like what they would experience elsewhere.

It might be harder to do site-wide, but I am no coder. Yet I would at least aim for it in the English text fields within the course itself. You already know those fields are for English, so I would presume you could left-justify those fields without affecting the Arabic text fields which look beautiful in right to left.

I did the first skill, too, although it’s harder for me, cause Arabic is a language I’m just learning, too :p I liked it, but I had a problem.... In English you have “boy, a boy and the boy”... In Arabic you only have “ولد” and “الولد”... so when you say in Arabic “ولد”, both “boy” and “a boy” should be accepted, but when I put “a boy”... it was marked as a mistake... For me, who is fluent in English, it’s not a problem, but I do feel that for an Arabic person who just starts learning the language, it could be a real issue... What do you think as an Arabic person yourself?

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Damascene

Definite and indefinite articles have different usages in Arabic and Englihs; thus, it is better that the learner understands that there is a difference. For example, a general noun as in "cats mew" need a definite article in Arabic القطط تموء If you remove ال the general reference of the noun will be lost. Hopefully this will be added as notes to make things clear.

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/boringtomi

I agree, but when you say “ولد”, it also means “a boy”, but it’s not accepted as a correct answer.. Let me ask in another way: HOW do you say “a boy” in Arabic, because there was not one single place I would answer “a boy”... At the same time, when it’s a full sentence, like “I am a boy”, you do use it. As mentioned, I’m trying to put myself in the shoes of an Arabic person, and can’t imagine how they would understand it correctly. Having said all these, fantastic work guys, and it was blazingly fast, big kudos to you all!

May 9, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Katherle

Cool! There isn't any way to use this course for "reverse language learning" (learning Arabic instead of English), though, is there? I tried the first lesson and while clicking on the right pictures was no problem - I still remembered the Arabic words for "man" and "woman" :) and I can read the script -, I hit a stumbling block when I had to translate these words from English into Arabic, because I don't have an Arabic keyboard. Is there any way around this? I'm using my PC and not a mobile device.

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/GunnyTunes

You can familiarize yourself with the arabic layout from: http://www.arabic-keyboard.org/, it can be a bit counter-intuitive but you can also use this to copy then paste into the course. The arabic keyboard has slightly more letters than the English one, but nothing that needs an AltGr key. :)

Thank you!

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

And I have no idea why I thought I could understand the letters...they change forms as more are added?! I'd have to learn all that before I could start....

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/tariqnisarahmed

You could start with a course on Memrise. I am sure they have some for learning the alphabet and how it morphs in words. There's a fantastic set of courses that are based on frequency lists, so that you can learn the most used words and most used verbs first. But eventually we need a vocab list for the Duolingo vocabulary. Either here or on Memrise as a smart French student did for the Duolingo French course.

I did a really dumb thing because I was so excited about this course. I wanted to take a look so I changed my language to Arabic -> wants to learn English. But now I can't figure out how to change it back. And I can't read any of the menus. Please help, yes, I know I'm an idiot.

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

Okay, go to the down arrow by your picture, press the third thing in the list that comes down, then on the left side bar, click the second box to change your language. *I did this earlier, and freaked out a little, but it is the same layout, just reversed.

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/ruinchristmas

Thank you!!! Just as a note, it's the 2nd thing in the list that comes down. And after you click the second box and select "I know English and want to learn Spanish" or whatever, you somewhat unintuitively have to click the green box on top of those options, not the blue thing underneath.

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Salxandra

I'm glad that you fixed the problem. I ended up in the same situation when I decided to take a peek at the Japanese to English course. I randomly clicked buttons until my display was back in English. It will definitely increase your heart rate.

May 12, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

No hay problema. :D

May 10, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/susanstory

I've had this happen to me too. It changes the menus to the other language, which I don't understand and I was freaking how to get it back to English. I figured out to click on the list of languages, next to your picture. Click at the very bottom where it says "more languages", then if you can tell which says "English" in the list, do that. Otherwise, click the top one, which says "All languages" and then you can tell by the flags which is the courses for English speakers. I clicked on the one for Spanish for English speakers and opened that and whew, it brought me back to English. When I opened up the Hindi course, I was panicking about how to get it back to English and found "English" on the list, only by using Google Translate to learn what "English" is in Hindi and finding that the word for "English" is short and the first letter looks like the number 3. Now I think it's possible to tell by the flags if you can't understand the writing.

As we add more and more base languages, can the list of language-flags by our profile please be unified? In particular, in the menu bar of the web site. That flag if you click on it will let you switch courses -- but only within a single base language. And that is really unnecessary.

It would be better to have all the flags for all of a person's courses listed, perhaps grouping the shortcuts by base language. So right now, I have a US flag showing for my Arabic course. Clicking on it should show the one US flag for my Arabic course, and then after a small separation, the group of three shortcuts for my English to French, German, and Spanish, and then below that in a separate group the Spanish to French course that I rarely visit now because of the hassles of changing languages.

With the other languages, new courses in beta have been added to the app with the next update (the last iOS update excepted because it was purely a fix to put the practice function back). Whether the right-to-left nature of Arabic will make a difference, I don't know. However, I expect they will add the necessary code to the app as soon as possible, so it shouldn't.
