[This post is under construction]

Join us Nov 5th, at 11am-5pm PST to discuss Coco - Disney Pixar 2017 (PG. Animation, adventure, comedy) ! Remember to read any posted guidelines in that discussion before joining the conversation. Once I post that discussion, I'll put a link to it here. So, if you aren't already Following this discussion by having commented in it, be sure to subscribe to it with the "Follow" button. :)

Some discussion prompts to consider while watching it:
- What was your favorite thing about the animation style?
- What was your favorite part of the story and why? - Did the movie inspire you to seek outside sources to learn more about Día de los muertos? If so, what is something new you learned that you found surprising?

Note: Please remember not link to material that is deemed illegal/pirated in the US. It would be a breach of Duolingo's Terms of Service.

Hi folks!

Staff member Katy and I have been brainstorming together and I've gotten permission to make a few tiny steps into an idea called Forum Events. The hope is to offer a chance to use our target languages to converse a bit more casually about a topic. To clarify: I am not a Spanish teacher. This isn't about creating a class in the forum. It is simply an opportunity to use our target language, glorious errors and all, in written conversation. :)

As I'm most proficient in Spanish among my target languages on Duolingo, I'll be hosting a Forum Event for folks learning Spanish from English. There will likely be different kinds of events tested. But, for starters, I'll be hosting "A Movie & Conversation."

Movie suggestions:
What you can do to help: please suggest some Spanish-language movies. The movies themselves do not need to relate to language. The goal will just be that we get to use our target language to talk to each other about the movie. If you really like a suggestion someone has made, please up vote it. As your host, just note that I only have access to movies that are available on Netflix and Hulu. When you suggest a movie, please include the age rating. (Yes, you may suggest rated R movies.)

How this event will proceed:

  • Once the movie is selected, I'll make a discussion in which I post the title, the age rating, and a content disclaimer as provided by the Motion Picture Association of America.
  • I will write the date/time the conversation will open for participation.
  • The time before the start of the discussion will be a window in which to watch the movie.
  • The discussion will be locked before the start of the conversation time. If you're interested, we advise you follow the discussion --- and check mail notification is enabled for your account and that the email address shared with Duo in your settings is correct --- so that you'll be notified as soon as first comments arrive once the Discussion is opened.
  • Once the discussion for that movie opens, it will be open for a number of hours.
  • At the end of that time frame, it will be permanently locked.

If the event goes well, we will look into having more of these types of conversational forum events and for other languages.

Structural limitations:
I am aware that the current structure of the forums is not adequate for this. Consider this a pre-Labs idea. However, like labs, it is not guaranteed to be a permanent feature. We're just dipping our toes in here and thought it would be fun to invite you to dip your toes in as well. Rather than a small a/b test pool, it's happening here in the forums for anyone whose schedule allows.

Schedule of future events:
If there is a second event, we'll host it on a different day of the week so hopefully, it will be available to some whose schedules didn't allow for it in the future.

Event Moderation:
As there are forums dedicated to different things (Sentence Discussions/Troubleshooting/General/Language Specific/Educator), moderators have different instructions on what counts as on-topic and how stringently we are to moderate each forum. As there is not a separate forum for Forum Events at this time, please consider these events to be separate from the forums in which they are posted. Moderation may work differently inside of these events as we test things out. You may or may not receive notice of why your comment was deleted. Please be patient with us during this very earliest of test stages.

Feedback:
If you have feedback, please make it constructive and clear with ideas for improvement. And note that I have not been promised any tech time whatsover to make structural changes to the forum. This is, after all, the very first test of the idea. Additionally, please be kind. I'm not doing this to get paid. (I won't get paid.) I'm doing this because I know there are very many people who want more opportunities to practice their target language a little more casually on Duolingo. Up to this point, Duolingo has prohibited casual chat. With this event, we're testing a compromise. I won't necessarily be answering all of the comments or responding to critique and feedback. My plate is very full. However, please know that staff will be taking notes of the feedback in the background.

Thank you everyone (and also to Katy)! Don't forget to suggest movies below and include their age rating. ^_^

my favorite spanish movie and suggestion for inclusion

Motorcycle Diaries (2004) - la historia de Che Guevara deambulando por Sud America. Una pelicula con todo: comedia, drama, el suspenso!

https://www.duolingo.com/kalyndra1

I second diarios de motocicleta! I saw it in English when it first came out (I think it is way older than 2014) and is fantastic - really made me want to travel around South America. Its about Che Guevara but is not really political at all - just a beautiful travel movie about South America. Amores perros is also a great movie but probably not appropriate for non-adult audiences.

I'm watching that in Spanish class right now! Definitely a good movie but it has some language (at least in the English subtitles) that Duo probably wouldn't approve of :/

Hi AWSMDEWD, the movie itself won't be posted in the forums. So as long as we post content disclaimers, hosting a forum event to discuss a movie even if it has strong language. Whether people choose to watch such a movie outside of the forums is not in Duolingo's control. However, people still need to follow the Community Guidelines for any content they bring back into the forums. So, they would need to not use the strong language in the forum conversation about the movie. :)

¡Dios Mio!

Has it really been a quarter century since I saw El Mariachi?

Now I feel old thinking that a movie that came out in the '90s is considered a classic, but it is a classic and I'm not as young as I was in 1992.

Even once we pick a movie, the other suggestions still have a chance, as this will possibly not be a one-off event. :)

As for the downvotes, it's someone with sock accounts entertaining themselves. It's dime-a-dozen behavior. Ignore it. We'll work around it. We've been doing so since the forums opened. :)

Suggestion: Casi Casi (rated PG)

It's a super low-budget Puerto Rican high school comedy in which virtually everyone involved in the making of the movie had absolutely no prior experience in film. I watched it in my high school Spanish class back in the day, and now my best friend is a high school Spanish teacher and she shows it to her class. It can be watched on YouTube.

Freely available movies is a great suggestion! I am not adept at finding movies that are legally free to people from many different places. My experience with youtube and vimeo is that they block videos based on countries due to different copyright laws. I am not skilled in navigating all of that. However, it will go on the list of things to consider for the future because it would make access to these events a whole lot easier. Maybe, there will be a staff member, moderator, or community member who is skilled in this area of knowledge. :)

There is no time like the present to start learning Spanish. The event date will be chosen once we've picked a movie. Likely, the Event will be early to mid-November. I imagine this will not be a one time event. :)

Hey, that's great! I recently read of another user suggesting tandem too. There are many wonderful language resources outside of Duolingo. A great deal of people (myself included) mix and match to find combinations that work well for us. I hope folks don't restrict themselves to only using Duolingo. As for La casa de las flores, my best friend recommended it to me last week. What a coincidence! ^_^

@The_Blobfish, being such an early run, it could end up fizzling out or, looking very very different in 2 years from these very early test runs. All we can do is try something new and see how it goes. The one thing I know for sure is that a lot of people have requested more opportunities to practice their target language in a conversational way and the To-Do list for devs is miles long. So, katy and I met a couple of weeks ago to brainstorm what we could try that would only need resources we already have available for early test-runs. :)

I think the success depends a lot on the people involved, both organizers and participants. We had a good little group for the book club when I was organizing it, then it got to be too time-consuming with other things going on for me. Some members of the forum started it up again later, and it ran for a while that way. It was always short texts - originally short sections of a longer work, then short stories. I did conversation in Italian, and when they started it up again they did it in English. There was interest at the time. I don't know if getting rid of Immersion would have an effect on the number of people willing/able to participate.

Hi mmseiple, if you were willing to coordinate with one of the Italian moderators who are active in our work space I think it would be great. It's important however that a moderator who is actively participating within the community of moderators be closely involved in the event, since we'll be monitoring and discussing these with our staff team.

To add on to antonmo, this is exactly what I was going to suggest, as more learners than you may think do not have access to Netflix, Hulu, etc. and if they do, they most likely will not have all of them. YouTube and other similar services that are not paid would be the ideal option.

With the creator/uploader's permission, we could re-upload and have our own YouTube comment section. Of course...as you said, moderation would be needed (although in a different way) so we will have to see what happens...

Oh! I didn't mean users had to access the movies from there. They might be able to access them through other mediums that I'm not able to. But, I can only host events for which I have access to the material being discussed. If this goes well, I won't be the only person hosting these events. And, they won't be kept within the same confines. It is just that those are my present confines. And because I just realized I might need to clarify: No one has in any way asked or suggested for me to endorse Netflix or Hulu. We're not making any money etc from that. I'm simply a poor bunny who has a netflix account and borrows a friend's hulu.

PannasOwen, sure! People can look up with the British film ratings are based on and it will still give them an idea of what to expect. If you or someone does list British film ratings, just mention that they are British ratings. Thanks! :)

Interesting idea. How about KISS (Keep it really Simple Stupid)?

Why not start first with a discussion of podcast #1 of podcasts.duolingo.com , or story #1, set #1 of stories.duolingo.com? If that is too simple, then start a discussion about all the stories in set #1 stories.duolingo.com The idea is for Duolingo Spanish learners to write about Duolingo experiences using the same vocabulary as in the Duolingo material.

Or choose a somewhat controversial topic, that people probably already have an opinion on, so that they can write in Spanish about it without needing 90 or more minutes to first watch a movie, one or more times.

i.e. Does your country have daylight savings? Should daylight savings time be extended to year round? Should daylight savings time be eliminated?

If somebody happens to be a 5 year Duolingo Spanish veteran with trees completed backwards, forwards, and reversed, wouldn’t that person have more fun going to a youtube video and commenting there in Spanish about a video, that native Spanish speakers are writing about.

Hi JimOser,

To answer your question of "why". Why this and not the seemingly endless other options.

From a moderating standpoint, allowing more casual conversations in the forums brings a variety of concerns. You've suggested some great things for practicing conversation together. Maybe, they will be used in the future.

However, the purpose of this test includes but also is more than just "get people talking in their target language." Duolingo knows that if it steps out of the way, people will do plenty of conversing without needing any prompts from mods or staff. And, along the way those people will unintentionally (and a few intentionally) create safety issues, forum retention concerns, etc. as they go about it.

The task before mods and staff with these early tests is to see if we can provide an opportunity for casual conversation that will not aggravate pre-existing concerns. And, as much as possible, not create new ones. However, we expect it might. Which is why moderating may differ in these forum event spaces as needed to test different approaches.

You asked, "Can’t we already write in this forum, in Spanish if we want to?" Yes and no. The company limits us in how we use these forums. For example, several years ago, I hosted a Spanish book club here. Staff restricted me to no more than 1 post per week. And, discussion had to center around specific questions about the material we'd read only. We couldn't discuss things outside of those questions. That ruling has continued unchanged to present. That is because the company still prohibits casual chat in the forums, even in one's target language. This forum event is a compromise between those restrictions and full blown casual chatting about anything random.

There are many considerations I and any other mods or staff who host a forum event have to take into account. Otherwise, there would have been many more options available to us. :)

@antonmo, I strongly recommend checking out the Duolingo Spanish Podcast episodes. My favorite episode so far has been "Rebecca Brown" I think it is Season 2, Episode 5. I'm not totally certain though. I have been listening to the episodes out of order at the gym.

Why should the discussion be limited? Is the discussion between all writers or is it one way discussions between the writer and the moderator.

A 24 hour limit is way too short. A week or longer limit would be much better.

Is the discussion between all writers or is it one way discussions between the writer and the moderator.

It will be between all writers who follow the guidelines posted in the Event. (Those who try to use it as an opportunity to troll or harass participants will have their comments removed and possibly lose the privilege of using the forum altogether. If people feel that they cannot mind themselves appropriately, they shouldn't participate.)

The time window will be limited as this event will be a moderated event. I don't particularly want to be awake for 24 hours. So, the time window depends on if other moderators who have some experience in Spanish are available to share shifts. It's a test event. Depending on how it goes, we'll host future events and try out variations.

I'm going to suggest one of my favorites called Como agua para chocolate (Like water for chocolate). I haven't watched this in a very long time. So, who knows if I will still love it as much as I used to. But, hopefully!

The youngest daughter in her family, the beautiful Tita (Lumi Cavazos) is forbidden to marry her true love, Pedro (Marco Leonardi). Since tradition dictates that Tita must care for her mother, Pedro weds her older sister, Rosaura (Yareli Arizmendi), though he still loves Tita. The situation creates much tension in the family, and Tita's powerful emotions begin to surface in fantastical ways through her cooking. As the years pass, unusual circumstances test the enduring love of Pedro and Tita.

Tini: The new life of Violetta (G) It's a movie based on a Disney TV show that was shown in Argentina and everywhere else in the world. The US had access to the TV show on Netflix, but I don't think the TV show is on there anymore, only the movie. Amazon also has the movie. The main girl and guy have gorgeous voices, the songs are fantastic, the plot is typical Disney and family-friendly. This movie (and the TV show) was ORIGINALLY in Spanish, which makes it cool because it's not translated from English!

Hi folks!

Coco - Disney Pixar 2017 (PG. Animation, adventure, comedy) ✔️

From the list I saved, I have access to Coco (Both the English and Spanish versions.) And Como agua para chocolate. As I'm not sure which full movies listed on Youtube might be there legally or pirated, and it looked like the youtube links went to movies that weren't charging on Youtube, I am going to err on the side of caution as if I link to pirated material, intentional or not, it could cost me my Duolingo account. (I recommend y'all be careful with that too.)

I imaging that Disney's Coco, being more recent, will be more accessible than Como agua para chocolate. So, on Monday, November 5th at 11am (Pacific Standard Time), I'll create a post for discussing the movie and things related to it in Spanish.

Some discussion prompts to consider while watching it:
- What was your favorite thing about the animation style?
- What was your favorite part of the story and why? - Did the movie inspire you to seek outside sources to learn more about Día de los muertos? If so, what is something new you learned that you found surprising?

On Nov. 5th, I might post additional conversational prompts that I hadn't thought of before then. Also remember to check for any posted guidelines before participating in the conversation.

Once I post the discussion on Nov. 5th, I'll comment here with the link. :)

Telemundo has a small cache of old movies that they show in the middle of the night. They repeat them often.

Where I live, Telemundo is a secondary over-the-air channel, so it's free for me. I don't know how common that is. (They also broadcast contemporary telenovelas, news, some live soccer, etc.) Much of their content includes Spanish subtitles.

La Otra Mujer (1972)

"La Otra Mujer," a drama-comedy about morality and the generation gap, got me hooked on these late-night movies.

In this movie, a wealthy man maintains an ongoing relationship with a mistress that includes three children, now two young adults and one young child.

The children weren't told that he was their father, but rather a friend of their family and benefactor. A photo of his wife's cousin, a bachelor who chose party life over home life, sat on the mantel above the fireplace. The children believed the man in the photo was their father.

When problems emerge for the older children (drugs, sex, anger) the mistress and the wealthy man decide more deception - a visit from the fake "father" - might improve the situation.

So the wealthy man pays the rakish cousin to appear in real life and assume the father role for a short time. Of course, there are unintended consequences for everyone.
