Please get rid of the "Gourmet" modules!
I lived in China for years and have been using Duo to keep up with my Mandarin now that I'm back in the US. It's been a pretty good experience, except with the "Gourmet" modules. Why do they try to translate food items that have no Chinese equivalent? How about just calling 包子 "baozi", for instance? Beyond that, the modules are so full of errors that I have failed to test out of a level three times simply because Duo would not accept English translations that should have been perfectly acceptable, or because I didn't know that 小笼包 should be "steamed pork dumplings". So frustrating!
The worst one is probably 酸辣汤 (in Gourmet 2) because the questions don't agree on a single translation. One time it's "sour and spicy soup", another time "spicy and sour soup" and there is also "hot and sour soup".
The really important thing there is to be sure to click "report" and "my answer was correct". The team has been pretty good about accepting my recommendations, and to my knowledge they can authorize unlimited correct answers for any given question.
"Baozi" and "Xiaolongbao" should definitely be reported as accurate translations, for example.
That is quite true. But I guess some of the Chinese names for food are too "exquisite". Like ，a Chines驴打滚 a food with a confusing name but it is actually a sort of rice cake. It is translated as "fried chop rice cake" which is even more bewildering.
I mean, the same could be said about the food in any country. For instance, how would you translate the American staple "meatloaf," or the German "jagerschnitzel"? Better just to go with the country-specific name rather than trying to put it in terms of another language. That's why I object so strongly to Duo's goofy English translations of Chinese foods.
