You may have noticed a new tab named Stories in the top bar on the Duolingo website. If you’re looking for a fun and fast way to boost your reading and listening skills there’s never been a better time to try out Duolingo Stories!

Stories is currently only available on the Duolingo website for English speaking learners of Spanish, French, German and Portuguese.

Stories are my favourite duolingo feature. I am really enjoying the new export words to tinycards feature. I plan on rereading all the stories now that I can practice the new vocab with tinycards so easily.

"I am really enjoying the new export words to tinycards feature."

Would you, please, tell me what "new export" are you referring too ? (I use the Tiny Cards by myself and I would be interested to the new feature you seem to speak about) Thanks!

After you finish a story there's a tab at the bottom that allows duolingo to export all of the vocab you've learned in the story to your tinycards profile and it makes a new vocab list. To allow this all you have to do is select "on" at the end of a story :)

This is exactly what I am doing. I'm currently on set five and doing 'Le Chasseur' but I am re-reading the stories from set one so that the vocabulary gets added to Tiny cards. Then the next day I do the set of cards to try to reinforce the new words.

I agree with the observation below asking why the titles are in english rather than the target language. Previously if I did not understand the title it made me inquisitive to find out what it meant!

One question, though - what was the reasoning behind renaming the stories in English rather than using the target language?

Using the target language for the story names was good to give people more exposure and did make it feel more immersive. But more users actually played the stories when we switched the titles to English. We think it's because for some users, titles in the target language don't immediately grab their attention when casually scanning the homepage.

It would be nice to have a little option to switch them back to the target language though. It absolutely isn't a necessity, just a little detail.

https://www.duolingo.com/Fauzan836172

Exactly. Its just a tiny detail, but gives us users control over the level of immersion each of us wants. I feel they should make that option available for us to switch the names' language.

I feel like if you're serious about learning you shouldn't be put off by a non-English title . . . idk nbd i guess but imo the more immersion the better.

https://www.duolingo.com/MorganVar60

In an ideal world, people trying to learn would not be put off by sneering put-downs either. But it can happen.

Also, if we were all REALLY serious about learning a language we wouldn't need programs like Duo, with silly rewards like crowns and lingots. We could learn Spanish with just a copy of Don Quixote and a Spanish dictionary, like Horation Hornblower. But the fact that we are all here means that none of us are serious enough to go it on our own like that, and can use the encouragement and help that Duo provides. If English titles encourage people, that is a good thing.

Well, I'm here and I'm very serious about learning how to speak Spanish. But having a Spanish novel and dictionary isn't enough for me. I like using Duo because it's interactive and that helps me to learn.

yeah well learning out of a book just isn't as effective on it's own because you don't get to actually hear it. That's the real beauty of Duo though the levels/crowns etc are great too :3

https://www.duolingo.com/MorganVar60

I absolutely agree it is not anywhere near the best way to learn. It's just harder.

My point is, I think it is REALLY counterproductive for people to sneer at tactics that make learning easier, more fun, and less intimidating for others, with the argument that a serious learner "shouldn't" need them. If people need them, they need them, and should use them. The most difficult part of learning any language is battling discouragement, and the best way to get discouraged and give up is to listen to people telling you that you "shouldn't" need the methods that work for you.

If you feel you aren't ready, or don't know enough words to know you'd be interested in that particular story, you shouldn't be put down. Be kind, be empathetic. Use language study to learn more about how others are different instead of being close minded and rude.

Stories are, hands down, the greatest thing to come out of Duolingo so far. You get to really get into the language and further your reading AND listening comprehension. Plus, since they're voice acted, they are actual native (or what sounds like native) speakers. Once it comes to the mobile app, Duolingo will be an incredible resource all around (although it already is).

For some of us it's like the awakening from the dark ages to the renaissance ! Greetings to all from Belgium!

The stories feature sure is great, but I'd like to point something out: I have started taking the German from English course about two years ago. 4 months ago I decided to start taking French, but I wanted to use the French from German course in order to improve my German on the way. The problem is that when entering the Stories tab, and choosing French, it adds the French from English course to my profile and all the xp I earn from the stories is then added to that course rather than the French from German course. Would love for it to be that Duolingo detects that if you have a language available in Stories, but taken in a language other than English, it will add the xp to that course, and that if you have multiple versions of a course (i.e. French from English and French from German) at the same time, you'd be able to choose the one you want to earn the xp in or something of the sort. Either way, the stories feature is great and I can't wait for it to be expanded to other languages too! (P.S. still waiting on the chatbots for the website version!)

Hi Just to say that if anyone is willing to learn Finnish (I have heard people talking about it not being on Duolingo) , try www.tasteoffinnish.fi. It is a free Finnish online course with several lessons created by the University of Helsinki for students studying there. I hope it helps.

Instead of tweaking the UI to make it slightly easier to use, do you think you could instead spend time bringing Stories out for other languages? I suppose I'm dreaming when I think we might someday have Stories for Hebrew, but I guess I can still dream....

I've said this elsewhere but I have started doing the stories from scratch so that I can get the vocabulary in Tiny Cards. Then I do the cards to reinforce the vocabulary. This really helps me because I don't always remember the new words/phrases given in the stories.

I am very new to Duolingo and languages in general. I am currently learning French. I've been on Duolingo for perhaps a couple months. Would it be recommended being so new to try Stories? Also, thus far I am realizing not knowing the French alphabets makes it a little difficult. Would Stories or any other feature on Duolingo help with that? Or would I catch on in time following the recommended path (Basic, Basic 2, greeting, etc)

I'd say try one of the first set and see how you do. If it seems too hard carry on down the tree and try again in a month say.

I know I found them hard to start with but am now on set 5 and am going back through from the first set again to add the vocabulary to Tiny Cards (which I definitely recommend doing the duolingo tree on). I am still picking up new things from set one. I think you only get things when you have read them a few times (as long as you are at the right level).

Anyway good luck keep it up I've just passed my one year streak and made level 25 a while ago! I am definitely still learning.

Have a few lingots as I know they are hard to get at the start.

Hi Leroy, I understand not knowing the alphabet. I'm also studying french but I learned the basics in high school. I often post french pronunciations, plurals and other tips in my club. It would help if you asked your club members. If they can't help, find another club until you find one that helps you learn.

Great job on the expanded menu of stories!

Quick question: When I first clicked on "Stories", I got the menu of all available languages with Stories. I did set #1 of French. Now the system will only show me the menu for French stories. I've tried going back "Home" and then to "Stories" -- same result. I'm trapped in a French dimension without my Tardis. How can I get back to the multi-dimensional, multi-lingual array of Stories?

Thanks!

I tried, I really did . . .

I added German to my course list and hovered -- only to be shunted back to French Stories. I tried doing some exercises in German to validate my German course selection. I am still being shunted into French Stories only, even when clicking on "Labs" and "Stories" from within the German "tree".

I even tried going outside Duolingo, with a Google search for "Duolingo stories German" -- and got shunted to French Stories. My search page was here: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=duolingo+stories+german&t=h_&atb=v72-4&ia=web

It seems that I am locked into the last language that I did Stories work in. When there was only Spanish, this wasn't a problem. But with all the great work that the various teams have put into expanding the Stories selection, I'd rrrrrreally like to use them to brush up my rustier languages.

I cannot find a way to pull up the umbrella page for all available language Stories (very surprised that Google couldn't get me to the main Stories menu).

What am I missing? Is anyone else experiencing this? Can anyone get my linguistic Tardis back???

Helpu min!
