The English sentence is unnatural. We would only say "this book is easy to understand."

Translation sounds rather awkward

Is the Indonesian sentence the right thing to say? Or is it as contrived and unlikely as the English translation?

Fortunately, the Indonesian looks correct. In George Quinn's "The Language of Today's Indonesian" there are examples like "Pendapatnya sulit dipahami" = "His opinion is difficult to understand" or "Bisa dipahami kalau..." = "It is understandable that..." [For the first of those, Quinn actually uses another spelling - more formal, I guess? - "difahami".)

I have the same question as ComeRaczy. Thank you.

I agree with the other comments. The English translations for all sentences should be things that someone would actually say. This sentence sounds like something said by someone who does not speak English very well.
