Oops. Lost 1800 plus days streak lost
Somehow I forgot about Duo yesterday and lost my 1800 plus day streak.. Bummer but strangely I am not upset. Not to worry though, I am still learning and really, what does it matter?
It doesn't. your knowledge is still there. Duolingo streak is just a virtual game tool, that you cannot put on your resume. Your knowledge you CAN and should put on your resume because it is part of who you are in real life. Hope this helps..:-)
That's a different attitude to some people who feel sad that they lost their streak, even so far as to quitting Duolingo. More people should have that attitude, since it's not the streak that matters but the knowledge you've retained when you were attaining that streak. Good luck with future language learning!
It doesn't matter, as long as you don't quit altogether! Some people go off grid for weeks! It's continuing on with the educations that counts!
I love your positive attitude! I too have lost several streaks which I estimate would total close to 2000, having been on DL since 2014 and completed 3 courses. However, I found building a streak was a great motivater in getting me to daily practice. Now not so much. I still do exercises every day but it's no longer important to me. I'll never forget all I've learned. My German grammar has vastly improved and I've learned basic French and Danish. All in all, not so bad.
Yes, like you I miss very much the many friends I made. The native German speakers were especially generous in correcting me. I found the Activity stream so beneficial. Although they had their reasons, its removal was a disappointment to me and many others.
I am hoping that it will be reinstated. As you say, it was a tool so beneficial to the community.
Because the implementation didn't scale well, and as time went by it got slower and slower to load and it was getting more and more bloated and was slowing down the whole system as a result.
That being said I can only hope they re-implement it, as it was a very valuable feature for a number of reasons. I've almost completely lost touch with all the friends I had made on Duolingo as a result of the loss of this feature.
I suggest a moderator to erase any post not having to do with language learning.
If I did that, I would be removed as a moderator.
I totally agree with you. If and when it.s reinstated, I suggest a moderator to erase any post not having to do with language learning. I too have lost the many friends I'd made over the past 4 years. I found it a wonderful way of asking for and getting infoprmation.
That is quite sad after all the days you went on Duolingo, but you can all ways do streak freeze so if forget about Duo for one day it will save your streaks. Of course, it doesn't matter even if you just do Duo three times a week as long as you are learning new things. Hope you keep learning!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can buy a streak freeze in the shop for a few lingots. I think they are only valid for one day though. i.e. You buy a streak freeze, and if you miss one day of Duolingo, your streak will still remain. I also believe that you get one free streak freeze when you start duolingo for the first time.
Once you have 10 lingots which you get from finishing lessons, go to the store and buy a streak freeze if you want to take a day off from your streak. If this was helpful let me know.
That's the spirit! Here are seven lingots on this beautiful Sunday morning to help you buy a streak freeze. If I am not mistaken you can correct your streak with it, within one or two days so you get back your lost streaks. Have a great day!
Unfortunately, streak freezes only work if you buy them before you lose your streak, not after. There is an option on the app to get your streak back, but you have to pay.
congrats to your acomplishments.
Did you start with all languages on Duolingo from scratch?
How do you feel about them after practicing them ~3-5 years?
How do you use those languages in your daily life?
Do you also follow Tom Crewther's (he is from the UK) missions?
An American Youtuber who speaks now Portuguese fluently told in one of his earlier videos that he has been learning Spanish before for at least 10/11 years...I can't really compare this huge Romance language knowledge to my limited two years process :(
So in fact you like it as you are "free" now? ;)
I am wondering a bit about something but I kinda worry to express my "German thinkings" as (English) native people e.g from the US recently want to get me wrong...all the time... so why should it be really otherwise here in this thread (but maybe I am lucky as you are from the UK ;)):
- You used Duolingo as a free service for a longer time and learned/practiced multiple languages
- You are not a Plus member yet
- you almost reached 5 years, wow, incredible!
- "streak repair" is still available (days ago <4, current streak <3): http://www.duome.eu/maggimunro
- Why not simply get (pay with $$$) it back and extend it?
what does it matter?
Probably it's just your www.duome.eu SHOF ranking, nothing more? :-)
Either you could "sponsor" Duolingo (new business income):
by getting the "streak repair" item on the mobile apps
alternatively: becoming a Plus member which also seems to repair the streak on the web portal (I heard about this and the Plus popup message from a user that the prices are almost identical)
Both would maybe help a bit the Duolingo company to generate (real, not virtual) income.
My 2 cents for the pros and cons.
I know you guys will now have to hit on me as a German speaker because of my limited ability to express and transport these thoughts appropriately in the English language much more smoothly, but basically these have been my (first) rudimentary thoughts reading your thread and I just hope you won't be too hard to me.
Please don't get me wrong (bitte nichts in den falschen Hals bekommen oder gleich persönlich nehmen!).
As you have already RESTARTED your current streak (new is 1 day) you are IMHO not really free from Duolingo and reaching your next minimum coach goal each day??
Or is your new idea to reset it all 10-30 days? ;)
Q: What is the big difference on a really big 1833 day streak or a 30-90++ days streak speaking about the required DAILY binding?
I really hope that I can reach a longer streak like you had, in the future.
No, I am not 100% sure if I can ever accomplish this what you have, but I hope and I am convinced that a higher streak would personally help me (probably many others) to hopefully achieve this to constantly push forward and not give up too soon.
For sure it will be for me a very long and rocky path to further improve in Portuguese (e.g verb tenses, Subjunctives, new 5000-9000 words vocabulary) and even not to speak about the much more difficult native listening+speaking process.....and hopefully to add the Spanish and French languages laters.
This is the reason why I nevertheless feel sad that you somehow lost it...even it may be a relief for you for the moment.
Any further tips you can give to me/us to achieve something great as you have?
I wish you much success for your next steps.
Do you have any concrete plans if you start something new or what country you will be visiting?
Best regards / Viele Grüße aus Deutschland
Goodness me, what a very long post. I had been doing a part time French degree course, but I really started to find it very boring because of the tutor’s unvaried teaching style. So, I started Duolingo with a good deal of grammatical knowledge in French. I use French regularly since we have a house in France and have several French friends. I use the French Duo as a mental daily exercise. However, I started learning Spanish about three years ago, completely from scratch, and I am finding it very useful since our .house is close to the Spanish border and we seem to spend more time over the border. I also periodically dip into Italian, depending on our planned holidays. As for the Greek, I used that as a real challenge as I was recovering from heart surgery and had to be very inactive for quite some time. As for your “limited abilty” to express yourself in English, I only wish I could write so fluently in Spanish and Italian as you do in English.
I am sorry that you lost your streak. Your attitude is commendable. If the streak loss is important to you you can still fix it with a payment to Duolingo. If it is not important to you you still have the knowledge that you learned during those many days. I started French and my 99 day streak when I was told I needed heart surgery so I can relate. It's given me something to take my mind off of it. I will have my surgery sometime late Spring/ early Summer next year with a quiet recovery period so I'm hoping by the end I will be quite proficient in French. It's a nice goal with a promised trip to Paris to look forward to at the end of the tunnel.
I lost my 183 day streak yesterday. Does anyone know how to buy the streak repair? It should be available 1-2 days after losing. I have purchased it in the past, after getting several offers when I've logged in. The streak is a good motivator and it helps accumulate ingots for extras.
Your data "1+2" looks good so far, even "2+3" will be probably fine (3+4 = KO).
Does anyone know how to buy the streak repair?
In the Duolingo mobile apps (IOS, Android) you go to the "Duolingo lingot store".
There you will see the "streak repair" item if you are in the right A/B group.
On web: You would have to go for a monthly Plus subscription; you can't get the "streak repair" - without Plus - on the web lingot store!
On the IOS app there probably also is a popup message when you start/login; Android doesn't do it; you have to go to the lingot store in the app for yourself.
Thank you T.H, I can buy a streak repair for reserve but there is no option to buy a streak repair to get me back to my accumulated total. Buying the Duo Plus does not repair yesterday's break, in fact, the purchase begins Nov 1 and today is Oct 28. Duo is always changing the rules.
Quote: I can buy a streak repair for RESERVE
The store item for future protection (=equipped when bought) is actually called:
and it is also available on the web lingot store.
but there is no option to buy a streak repair
Web? IOS? Android?
Looks like you are in the wrong A/B group, sorry, even you are currently eligible to buy it: www.duome.eu/lemb20

I would have expected that if you buy it on the web portal TODAY, that you will become a Plus member today and that you will be able to make use of the "streak repair" monthly free option immediately, like the other user has told me (for the web portal)?!?
But I have never tried it myself...sorry....can not really assist with "Duolingo Plus" memberships and streak repairs.
I just know that the "streak repair" works on the Android app with an Android emulator software (KOPlayer) on a real computer as long your user account is eligible to buy it (A/B test group thing).
Maggimunro, thank you for posting: I was able to restore my streak by subscribing to Plus. (A free 7 day trial then subscription starts on Nov 4). At first, it didn’t look like the repair would go through but when transaction was completed, I was restored. Yay! Having Plus is interesting and inspired me to go up a level.
Ouch that outta hurt, but i hope that wont stop you from learning new langue
maggimunro, your three level 25 says a lot about your continued dedication, so, good for you for reaching a 1800-plus day streak, and even more good for you to not be too attached to it. You've earned every thing you've learned. I expect to see you here every day going forward too! :-) Bravo!!
Quote: Wow, it worked and I suppose I can’t complain about paying something back to Duo after almost five years of free learning.
Oh, that's really cool!
Damit hätte ich ja nun überhaupt nicht gerechnet! :-)
Hatte echt anfangs geglaubt Du hattest fast damit abgeschlossen.
If anyone speaks or learns German and understands a bit of this above text or gets a good (understandable) translation result from Google, hopefully you know what I mean.
Thank you guys!
I guess it was time again for a little success story, despite my initial fears (I almost had not typed my first (initial) comment).
Happy Sunday evening!
I may try to translate this from my native German into English somewhere in November as I will probably be quite busy the next days.
Not so easy to accomplish this, for sure.
Sorry, now I see again this post is actually located in the French forum.
Yes, I know Sitesurf, you had warned be before in another thread about not using the German language in your French forum. Sorry.
But as I am so happy right now, I wanted to post it right away and not postphone it any further.
True! I recently lost a streak (although it was nowhere near what yours was) it doesn't really matter as long as I'm learning that is all that matters and all that should matter.
That's a great attitude.I had a 365 day streak once.. I skipped a day over Christmas.. I thought i had a streak freeze, but streaks don't matter! They're cool but learning is more important! I didn't do Duolingo for 2 weeks after Christmas because of that. You're doing great!
Yes maggimunro, the streak is important. When i was in the Tanzania outback this year, I organized a friend to save the streak...
OUCH, but still, I really like your attitude towards it, I respect that, and I know that if I lost a streak that big, id hate myself.
very sad though... That's why you need to always have streak freezes on I guess
@ maggimunroPLUS I give you a lingot... With 10 lingots you freeze a streak of one (1) day. I lost 250+270 days streak. Now I am in 91 days and I freezed a streak of 10 days with 10 lingots. You do not wait to freeze it when you need it. You can make it in advance. You can buy the streak. You are user "plus" and maybe you have more possibilities in streak. I hope help you
I had the same reaction when I lost my streak. At first I was really upset, but then, what does it matter? I came here to learn, not to earn ingots and shields, right?
That is a huge streak! I would be so disappointed! Although you have a great attitude about it!
It doesn't matter! What is important is how committed you are to learning! You are amazing!! However did you amass so many days?
A bit of obsessive compulsion, after losing aprevious 160 day streak, plus a period of illness that kept me pretty much confined to quarters for a couple of years. But I am absolutely fine now and seem to have restored my streak by becoming a Plus member. So all in all, I am a happy bunny!
Unfortunately, that means you lost 1800 days of knokwledge! That's how it works!
...On a serious note, I must admit I was a little bummed when I lost my 270+ days streak, but only for a few minutes - Duolingo is about learning! But... now is the time to keep this streak alive!
I feel you. I lost my 1366 day streak (I wasn't really counting :) ) around the time we stopped being able to write on one another's activity streams. I was just kind of blue about it. Glad you're taking it in stride. I did miss those wonderful 10 day Lingot bonuses, even if they weren't really useful. Bonne continuation!
Im so sorry about losing your streak but I love your Attitude about it that. You Are just taking a deep breath in a will start it again. :)
What a shame...:( Your knowledge is still there! Just keep up trying your best:)
I guess you have got your streak back after all those years of learning. It is really worth it!!!!!!!!!!!
