Why people should learn Chinese

First of all, Chinese is an amazing language. It really helps me to focus on other school subjects and helps calm me down when stressed. It also is a really fun an interesting langauge to learn. I have been studying it for nearly 3 years and have enjoyed every moment of it. It has only been this year I have started to learn Chinese on DUOLINGO and I find it really helps me with the words and the pronoucations. So, do you think it is time to learn Chinese.

I'm really enjoying the challenge. Plus, there are millions of Chinese speakers in the world, many of them creating literature, songs and films that would be inaccessible to us otherwise.

Also if you decide to pursue a job relating to business, Chinese is a handy tool to have, as China is becoming the center of global economics.

I'll play devil's advocate here by saying that while you do have a point, it's not like every person pursuing international business-related work will be going to China... or will ever go... I feel like the emphasis on learning Chinese for this very reason is unwarranted.

What other resources have you been using to learn Chinese (and which have been the most helpful).

Pleco on my phone or https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/ on my computer for dictionaries https://tinycards.duolingo.com/decks/8S2nVDNE/chinese-kangxi-radicals for practicing the radicals

also, pen and paper for writing down each of the new sentances because I realized that being unable to write is a bit of a detriment even as my reading was becoming passable

OMG! I really wonder what else do you do except for learning foreign languageS! How could you learn that much? What is the result? Do you really use all of them? BTW, if you need one more Chinese speaker to practice, here I am!

Actually, I pretty much use Duolingo only for Chinese right now. The other languages I do a lot of listening to radio, TV, and podcasts to improve. The high numbers I have was over a long period of time. ( You can see my streak is over 3 years.) But really, I think the "I'm too busy, or I don't have as much time as others" is an excuse. We find time for what we want. People say they are busy but spend hours playing video games, doing Facebook, Instagram, and other social media, chatting on the phone for hours, surfing the Internet, watching TV and so on. Then they say "I have limited time to learn a language." I see it in my own family. It is impossible for my wife to do even one lesson on Duolingo every day. She will miss days or even weeks in between! Yet she spends hours on her smart phone and watches TV for hours at times too. It all depends on your priorities. My results have been very good. With Duolingo and a ton of listening I have gone from an A2 to at least a C1 level in French and from zero in German to maybe nearing a B2 in German? I have hour long conversations on Skype with natives in German and French. Chinese is my hardest challenge. I just reached level 25 in Chinese today, and I am totally loving this language! I find it so much harder than other languages, but I can say sentences using Duolingo vocabulary and I'm sure I make lots of mistakes with the correct tones, but I have recorded sentences and sent them to Chinese contacts and they understood me! That encouraged me so much because I really felt I wasn't progressing fast enough in Chinese.

My numbers are actually the opposite in some cases. I'm a native English speaker and Spanish is my most fluent language after English because I live in Spain. The low number is because I just tested out of it. French is next, then German. Chinese is weakest. My smaller numbers I am useless in. I was just trying them out. Actually my high numbers are NOT from English, except for Chinese. German and Italian I did from French, and French from German.

I know lots of Chinese people, whom it's fun to surprise with a phrase here and there, and it's wonderfully stimulating to learn something so different from what I'm used to, and gives insights into how language affects thought and even culture. And Duolingo does make it easier than any other system I've tried, and if there are some issues still, the module improves all the time.

I study Chinese for two reasons: 1. It is utterly beautiful and logical. The Chinese have a great way of thinking. 2. I've always been madly in love with Stephen Chow and Donnie Yen and always will be :-) OK so there are more reasons than these but these are just off the top of my head. ;-) ...and yes, before anyone points it out, I realise Stephen Chow and Donnie Yen are Cantonese speakers but I didn't know that when I started learning Mandarin years ago.

How does it help to calm down? it it the tones?

November 27, 2018

I really like learning Chinese, I watch shows and movies to help me improve it! I also write the pinyin down in my Chinese book and practice reading it! Chinese sounds very beautiful and without the tones it would be a total bummer! Just imagine without the tones how Chinese would sound! It wouldn't sound as beautiful as it is. I watch Chinese shows on www.viki.com it's a really good website it has all sorts of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and other Asian shows. It also has a mode called learn Mode and it helps you learn, example: click on the Chinese characters when on learn mode and it has an audio button click on it and it will say what the word is in pinyin. ---------> 双--- gives you Shuāng it will tell you how to say it.

My friend also uses viki, and it's really helping her with her Chinese.

The shows I watch: Princess Agents (waiting for season 2) The Eternal Love and Eternal Love 2 these are good shows to practice your Chinese! There are many other's that I haven't watched yet! ;)
