How rude is déteste if someone offers you food?
In English, if someone offers you broccoli and you don't like it, you would never say " I detest" broccoli or "I hate" broccoli. You would say the much more polite, " I don't like" broccoli ... Trying to gauge - is this the same in French? Is it better to use "je n'aime pas" in this instance rather than "je deteste"?
Thanks ...I have just been doing the je déteste exercises and wondered if use of hate or detest is as strong as in English ..I am thinking perhaps it is ?
Indeed saying "deteste" is too strong if you want to be polite . You can say "non merci ,je n'aime pas ça " , if your host insists "non, je n'aime vraiment pas ça, merci" .
