I think a better translation would be "They held me responsible". It's closer to the words the French sentence uses and it's more accurate to how English speakers word a sentence like this. Living in America, I don't know many people who would say "They reckoned me as responsible."

"me" as the direct object of "ont tenu(e)" is placed before that verb, so the past participle has to agree with the object.

  • "me" can be a "he" or a "she"
