what is the difference between gute and guten

endings on adjectives depend on case and number, see the chart link provided by other people who replied
You use "guten" when the noun is masculine, and "gute" when the noun is feminine.
often true... but it can get more complicated...
dog is masculine... but the good dog is der gute Hund
