How Russians say "How".

It is easy: how - как or каким образом. But very often you can hear: "Каким макаром ты оказался здесь?" А. So, "таким макаром" has the same meaning as "как/каким образом". (Makar) is a man name (not popular now). But why they use it like this? And why Makar, not Egor or Lisa ? Not bad.

In the Dictionary "Phraseologisms in the Russian Speech", the assumption is made as follows: the expression goes back to folklore, where the name Makar is associated with a poor, unhappy person, an extreme loser.

"Таким макаром" often used when a man lacking the means creates his own way to do something.

There are other personal names used in phraseologisms:

Егор > объегорить (to cheat)
Емеля > объемелить (to cheat)
Кузьма > подкузьмить (to frame)
Кузя > показать кузькину мать (to promise to treat mercilessly)

My impression is, these names were used to refer to poor people living hard lives and trying to make ends meet.

very interesting..indeed many people still use these expressions (maybe just not so often) ,without even thinking of the personal names of those poor people that historically they came from
