Why does Duolingo download a 200MB database almost every day, and how do I stop it?
When I first installed duolingo, I clicked on the lessons to download them so I could study offline.
Now, it decides to download a 200MB (or larger) database every day, or every other day at best. The app is unusable during this period, which can take hours (the bandwidth limit is not on my end), trying to use the app during the download causes constant crashes.
I changed the download settings to "wifi only", but there does not seem to be any way to NOT CONTINUALLY DOWNLOAD HUNDREDS OF MEGABYTES OF USELESS DATA.
After reading some other posts in this forum, let me add some info:
This is Android 6.0.1, app version 3.104.2.
This has been happening for a while now, starting before the current update (October 25th), so it's not a case of "you haven't updated to the lastest version! Waaa! That fixes everything!1!!11"
Yes, I'm annoyed. Does it show? Good.
There had been two threads that the apps nowadays download up to 8GIG of data???
Hi! I haven't encountered this personally, but based on what you're saying here, this doesn't seem right. Have you tried submitting a bug report, by chance? https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204728264-How-do-I-report-a-bug-
Yes, I've reported a bug. Gotten an automated response that give no information, and nothing more.
Plus subcribers should receive a personal answer, via the "email support" in the "settings" in the Plus section of their account.
Example of a helpful answer in
I actually got a real answer from the email support now (not from the link you gave me but through the settings in the plus-section of the app) and the support worker told me that ........
It is almost impossible to help users who are paying for Plus and Live (https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/29541221$comment_id%3D29544718), because there is none or hardly any useful information in the Duolingo Help Center.
Just for clarification purposes, did you submit it through the link on the website (like I originally gave) or through the Plus section of the app (like Pentaan posted)? That wasn't a method I was aware of, and it sounds like you should receive a response from there, so I'm curious which one you used.
Actually, the "Plus Support" link is broken (yet another bug in Duolingo).
It's actually a "mailto:" link, and since my email is not tied to a web browser (it cuts down on spam, phishing, and viruses A LOT), it won't let me use my plus account support.
Actually, there is no "email support" in the "settings" section of my Plus account.
There is a "Plus Support" "EMAIL SUPPORT" pane on my homepage, but as noted below it's broken.
In the Firefox browser, I am often able to copy the email adress in a "mailto: link" by "clicking on the right button of my mouse" and choosing "Copy email address"
(PC: OS Linux Mageia 5)
"Right click" on "Support" on this webpage
Are you sure it's actually downloading 200 MB everyday and not just incorrect UI?
I had Duolingo updating offline database almost everyday, and the UI is misleadingly appearing to look like it's downloading the entire hundreds of megabytes of database every time it updates, but when I view the actual Data usage on my phone settings, there it shows that the app isn't actually using that much data.
Also, the app should remain usable even while the offline database is updating; you should be able to continue a lesson.
