Still no tips & notes available in the app (Android & iOS)
When I used the iOS app, I got sick of DuoLingo proudly announcing that tips & notes were now available in the app. Every update in the iOS store said "and now with tips & notes!" and yet this feature NEVER appeared in my app no matter how many times I updated it. Highly annoying and with no explanation from DuoLingo as to why this should be.
Yesterday I upgraded my phone to an Android device and downloaded DL again. Just as before, the blurb in the app store proudly stated that tips and notes were now a feature of the app, and just as before there is no such feature in my app.
DuoLingo you have to do better with this stuff. I'm sure someone will helpfully explain that they only roll out certain features to certain account holders and that they'll "get round to everyone eventually." But if that is the case, why not EXPLAIN to people that not everyone will see the change? Do you not see how frustrating it is when you're proclaiming that your app has a new feature that not everyone will see, and when you don't make any effort in your blurb to explain why not everyone will see it? I find this kind of sloppy and unprofessional tbh. The inconsistency across your platforms is horrible.
Here's what it says in the Google Play store: "New on Android: language tips! Tap the tips icon next to certain skills....." and goes on to say it's available in the French course (which is what I'm studying). Well, I've looked at all the skills in my tree and none of them have tips. Did you ever stop to think that when you advertise a feature which you have no intention of rolling out to everyone, that people will waste time looking for it and wondering where they've gone wrong? Much better management of updates and rollouts needed!
yeah I just don't understand what's so hard about copy pasting a bunch of text into the app
You probably can't "copy and paste" the html formatted "tips and notes" from the web directly to the app mobile screens...it needs to be rendered somehow to match the screen and highlight text, support tables, etc.
Actually staff has already been completely re-engineering the EN-SP and EN-FR tree V4 "mobile grammar notes" in a new format/layout including NEW features.
We can not compare apples to bananas.
And because of their new mobile tips format, it will be IMHO less likely that those app notes will be easily added to ALL languages (with existing web grammar notes) quite soon.
At least they have started in porting them (a few) over for the EN->SP course to the web tips.
No, as someone who has done a bit of web development for both mobile and desktop, I can tell you that with today's development tools and libraries, it really is almost as simple as just copy/pasting the info across. Reformating a simple web page like that to a vertical format is absolutely simple and trouble free.
yeah as it's extremely difficult to fit a table to a mobile screen? not falling for these excuses
I appreciate that fact, but that doesn't detract from the fact that DL is being very unhelpful and sloppy in its rollouts and new feature announcements when it doesn't explain these things. People see "NEW IN APP: tips and notes!" and they expect to see it in their app, simple as that. Also, there is no real technical reason why the notes & tips that are available for my tree on the website version could not be added to the app. In terms of app development, this is a child's play-like task which should be done ASAP because the app is NOT the full course without the grammar notes.
Good post! You are right that they advertise language tips for French. Have you tried Spanish and Chinese? Anyway they should investigate what has gone wrong and where.
AFAIK there only is one EN-SP course with 113 skills and 520 lessons (not sure if it is A/B); I guess it is final already, just like EN-PT.
Mobile tips will definitely work better for the EN-SP course (no I have not tried ;)).
