Duolingo "Night Mode"

This is one current project (see updates below) that everyone can use as a "Night Mode". It turns backgrounds to black and text to red. There are still many style errors, but this was to avoid any copyright issues with the code. Feel free to propose improved versions. Also, as @dogomolo mentioned, there are many projects which have already been in development, like https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/28250372

Duo Administration: If you want to change and/or use the code, please go ahead. We would love to see an official Duolingo Night Mode.

UPDATES:

If you do use github, Stylus or userstyles: DuoBareBlack is on userstyles, and works on Stylus. The repository for github is nightMode.

If you don't use a browser extension: the current code is posted in the last paragraph. Open one Duolingo tab for lessons and settings and one for forums (or you'll have to start the following process again). Right click in each tab and choose "inspect element." Under the "Style Editor" or "CSS Editor" tab, hit the "add" or "+" option, and paste the code after replacing the ?s with *s.

CURRENT CODE (find and replace all occurences of "?" with an asterisk star "*"):

? { border:none !important; color:#800 !important; background-color:rgba(0,0,0,0) !important; } html { background-color:black !important; } path { fill:#800; } ul { border-left:none !important; border-top:none !important; border-top:2px solid #a00 !important; border-bottom:none !important; } span { opacity:.9; } img { opacity:.8; } circle { fill:#300 !important; } ?:enabled { background-color:#300 !important; } div { background:rgba(0,0,0,0) !important; } div[style?="opacity: 1"] { background:#800 !important; } a:hover, button:hover { border-bottom:2px solid #f00 !important; } label:hover, li:hover, a:hover, button:hover, span:hover { color:#f00 !important; } ?:disabled, ?:disabled:hover { color:#800 !important; background-color:#000 !important; border:none !important; }

Very nice! This will be perfect when I wake up from bed, after a nightmare about a lost streak. :P

That way, I will be able to do a lesson, in the dark, without blinding myself. :P

Hahaha exactly :) Although I don't have as much to worry about losing on my streak :P

Never used a streak freeze--not even equipped one. Should I?

Hahaha, I have the same problem. Im laying in bed at night, then i forget I havent met my goal yet, and I freak out. This feature would be awesome, also it would be great out of night too.

yes always always always have a streak freeze. That said I generally do my duo before going to bed sometime after midnight so there's no chance of forgetting lol

Okay, I equipped one. You have a crazy streak, so maybe streak freezes are helpful. I haven't had any use for this streak freeze, yet. I'm pretty active. I remember most of the time. If I don't, at least I have a streak freeze in place. Thank you!

Yes. Absolutely. Otherwise your nightmare may well become a reality!!

I put on a pair of cheap sunglasses for night mode.

I got me some with thick black frames with glass so dark even my wife don't know my name. Oh, yeah.

Awesome! I was wanting a night theme yesterday, due to a migraine.

Next to a dark theme, filtering blue light can also help a lot (and not putting the brightness of your screen too high)

elvper has also made a nice dark theme https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/28250372

On Firefox I'm using an extension called "Stylus" where people can upload their own themes or "styles" for websites. There are already multiple dark/night themes though. Maybe you could upload yours there.

November 12, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/donewiththis

Awesome! I'll try that. Would uploading it to Stylus make it available for other users?

November 12, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Micah891366

It also doesn't hurt to upload it to more than one place.

November 12, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/donewiththis

Do you know of any other places I could upload it to? I can't paste the code on the forum, as it filters certain characters out.

November 12, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mededogen

It would make it available for everyone, yeah. I'd try it if you decided to put it there.

I checked it out, but userstyles requires a license to be placed on the code. I should check the administrators' licensing regarding css selectors if I want to license any of my own code :( Sometimes I wish Duo had a developer's forum :/ Thanks for the suggestions, though :) It works with Stylus

I don't have the ability to make changes on the computer I use, so I would LOVE it if the administrators of Duolingo made your night mode an official Duolingo feature. I often struggle with the brightness of the screen (which isn't adjustable by end users here).

No clue about what a .css is, but I'm definitely interested in a night mode Duo

Sounds like a good idea! Using a screen with the normal blue light waves at night can disrupt the light sensing parts of the eyes and interfere with melatonin which makes it hard to sleep. If anybody has any problems with this you can change the screen to green light waves which don't have the same effect.

I am interested and can test on chrome if you would like.

Nice to see other people also putting time into dark themes. The red is actually very easy on the eyes.

If you want to find some particular CSS, my code can help, direct link to the CSS (in a JS file): https://github.com/elvper/Duolingo-True-Dark/blob/master/css.js

No need to worry about copy rights or whatever in case you want to copy some things from it, I don't mind at all. In case I need to state it clearer: you have my permission to take / modify whatever you want from it.

To turn down the brightness/color temperature/invert colors FOR ALL PROGRAMS?:

Install Twilight on Android

Install SunsetScreen on Windows

Install Redshift on Linux

Install "Flux" if you love torturing yourself and are a design hipster

This works for pretty much everything. It's what I use on all my screens and I can't live without it anymore.

I'm a bit late to the party, but if anybody prefers browser extensions, I'm a developer of Duolingo Boost extension which, among other features, has a night mode as well. You can download Firefox version (https://addons.mozilla.org/sk/firefox/addon/duolingo-boost/) or Chrome version (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/duolingo-boost/mgecoicpalmpphlgfkdepgpofjcnggkn). There are several other browsers that support Chrome extensions like Vivaldi, thus the extension can be used on them too. I hope some of you'll find it useful. :-)

Isn't that just high contrast mode...?

November 13, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/donewiththis

I guess you could say it also serves as high contrast, in some ways, but in others, since there are differing shades of red that are dimmer than the white/yellow more typical of high contrast modes, it's a give or take.

I agree, a night mode would look cool on Duolingo.
