The Duolingo Spanish Podcast is officially back for Season 3, starting today! The new season begins with a series of true stories from South America, that will take you from Argentina and Colombia all the way to Antarctica (later in the season, we’ll even head over to Afghanistan!). New episodes will be released weekly, so make sure to subscribe at Apple Podcasts or your favorite listening app so you never miss a new story.

With over 6.3 million downloads to date, the Duolingo Spanish Podcast is now the #1 language-learning podcast. It’s designed to help you improve your Spanish comprehension while listening to fascinating, true stories told by Spanish speakers. The stories are told in slow, easy-to-understand Spanish, along with English narration by our host, Martina Castro. The language level is best suited for intermediate Spanish learners.

Check out podcast.duolingo.com for summaries, transcripts and full episodes from the current and previous seasons.

Gracias por escuchar. We can’t wait to hear what you think of Season 3!

Great! :D I was wondering however if there will ever be French podcasts? French is the second most learned course on Duolingo for English, and I really do enjoy the stories, and thank you 1,000 times for them, but I would also love to see French podcasts for extra immersion!

Yes! It's finally here. I really enjoy these podcasts. :)

A recommendation: A little more Spanish and a little less English; however, my expectations may have been met in this upcoming season. We'll see...

https://www.duolingo.com/Pamela95249

Oh, no! I am so delighted with the Podcasts as they are. I am just a beginner, but am able to understand the gist of the stories because of the English. That is what allows me to persist in listening to the Spanish, which is what is improving my ability to comprehend spoken Spanish. Listening to all-Spanish stories, which I can find elsewhere, is much too discouraging. It is because of these podcasts that I am moving along in my lessons, and can understand when my Hispanic friends talk. I understand that you are more advanced in the language, but I am very grateful for the podcasts just as they are. ...My wish: French podcasts, too.

I understand, but technically, when you are listening to the English, this is not strengthening your Spanish skills. If they repeated some of the things that they said in Spanish in English, that may help, but what I have found is that they mostly just present like 30% in English and 70% in Spanish. The English part is not helping you much. But, again, we'll see what this season is like.

And note, I am very grateful for these podcasts. I don't mean to sound greedy.

https://www.duolingo.com/Pamela95249

Giovanni, we will have to agree to disagree. I wanted to put an alternate perspective out there. The "30%" English you note is just enough to help me when I get lost, due to insufficient Spanish. Being able to remain connected with the story line has been improving my receptive Spanish skills, whereas listening to 100% Spanish stories results in my selecting singular words, which may or may not enhance vocabulary, but does not enhance my comprehension. I might as well listen to a list of vocabulary words, then.

We all learn differently! Buenas noches.

I completely get you. I recommend that when listening to one, go to podcast.duolingo.com to read the full transcript. Reading along helps a lot, and you can go through those sentences again and again as many times as you want after the podcast finishes or by pausing. What I meant is that in the English parts they tell new information about the story, they don't clarify the Spanish. So if you can't understand the Spanish that is being said, the English is not going to help you...except maybe to give you a break. And we all listen to the podcasts to strengthen our Spanish listening skills, right?

But you are correct, we all learn differently. Best of luck in your studies! Buenas noches, Pamela.

They should make interactive pages for each podcast like they have with the Duolingo Story Labs. Then you can follow along with the transcripts and also hover over words you don't know. They could even make little exercise to accompany each episode and then you could actually get points for listening to the podcast by completing the exercises.

e.g. check out storyling.com

Giovanni, today I listened to the Podcast with your thoughts in mind, particularly since they are advertised as for Intermediate learners, not newbies like me. I do see why you would like the English removed. If Duo ever does follow your suggestion, I hope they will keep the current format, rebranding it for folks like me, while giving you the all-Spanish version. In the meantime, I've located Extra Spanish, on youtube (another Discussion thread mentioned ExtraFrench, which I found silly but it is helping my comprehension), which may serve as an alternative to Podcasts; just not when I'm walking the beach! ha ha

Giovanni, I like the Duolingo Spanish podcast at its currently level of language proficiency because I've found it easier to find Spanish language material for more advanced learners. But, unless I am reading books or listening to stories that have a more specific focus on a younger target audience, I've not found nearly as many learning resources for intermediate learners of a wider age range. I feel that Duolingo did a good job locating that gap and providing this as an intervening resource. :)

Of course. Duolingo's stories and podcasts are the best I have seen. I think Rosetta Stone has stories, too, because I vaguely remember listening to them a while back, but they were not nearly as interesting and didn't have all the same features. Trust me, I'm not saying Duolingo doesn't make good podcasts. I just have the same issue as I do with the Story titles being in English now. I just feel like it would be more immersive with more Spanish. But I understand that the English keeps people more hooked. Either way, I encourage the team to keep making them because I certainly enjoy every single one.

I gave up on the podcasts because there was too much English for me although I liked the speed they were spoken at and the subjects.

I would like it if there were two versions of each podcast.

One as there are now, for all those that like them that way and the other one exactly the same words but totally in Spanish for those of us who want to listen to Spanish at the speed spoken in the podcasts which is a bit slower than Spanish TV and radio.

For what it's worth, my opinion is that Duolingo's Spanish podcast is calibrated just right. For those that are looking to augment their podcast listening with something more advanced, I recommend the 'TED en Español' podcast. There are not a lot of episodes, but those that are available are as interesting, if not more so in some cases, as any of the many English-language TED talks that are out there. In addition to listening in Podcast form, one can watch the original TED talk on YouTube, which offers captions/subtitles.

Great story, but shouldn't it be "La Testiga"?

https://www.duolingo.com/PM3003

No. "Testiga" doesn´t exist. "Testigo" is both masculine and feminine. So: "el testigo", "la testigo". Por ejemplo: "ella es la testigo principal en este jucio" (She is the main witness in this trial). According to: Diccionario de la Real Academia Española de la Lengua ,(www.rae.es): "La palabra testiga no está registrada en el Diccionario."

Strange. I thought in Spanish all the nouns and articles had to agree in gender.

https://www.duolingo.com/PM3003

They do. "Testigo" is both masculine and feminine. If it refers to a woman it is: "la testigo" and if it refers to a man it is: "el testigo". Una testigo simpáticA (fem.), Un testigo simpáticO (masc). Not all the nouns finished in "a" are feminine so as not all the nouns finished in "o" are masculine. "planeta" (planet) is masculine (El/Un planeta enano/lejano), "mano" (hand) is feminine ("la/una mano abierta/limpia/sucia ...) "el poeta", "el telegrama", "el sofá", "la radio, "la soprano", etc. In point 1.3.1 of this website you can find more examples of nouns like "testigo", which are the same word in masculine and feminine. http://eljuego.free.fr/Fichas_gramatica/FG_genero.htm#131 Hope it helps!

It's still jarring to see a word that specifically describes a woman have a masculine ending. "Mano" is a body part, not a person, "soprano" describes a singing style, and "radio" is an object, and also possibly an abbreviation. Many of the masculine words that end in "-a" come from the Greek language, which has different rules. I've been studying Spanish for 14 years, and in my experience it's extremely rare to come across words that describe actual women that end in "-o." It reminds me of a typo in the Italian Tinycards set that translated "the child" as "la bambino." I believe the website you linked, but I still find it very strange.

https://www.duolingo.com/PM3003

It's very interesting to read your comment! (I didn´t know that about many masculine nouns ending in -a come from Greek. Thank you. However, I disagree when you say "it's extremely rare to come across words that describe actual women that end in -o". Maybe it is not so common but It is definitely not "extremely rare" at all. We use them in our daily life. "lA soldadO fue trasladadA", "lA médicO españolA" (in some places they are starting to say "médica" but I havent heard it where I live), "la famosa soprano Montserrat Caballé", "la sabelotodO estaba calladA", "la pilotO, la sobrecargO del avión es italianA", ... Anyway, I don't mean to be right. I was trying to help out (as a native Spanish speaker, from Spain). A close relative is learning Spanish and I wanted to check this regarding the podcasts. Just one more thing my relative didn't know: there are some nouns called "epícenos": you don't know if they refer to a man or a woman unless someone mentions it. Buen día a todos

My one comment is that the Spanish spoken in the Antartica lesson was too slow, almost painfully so. Intermediate should be a little faster. But the stories are fantastic. If you pay 5 lingots and complete the 7 day streak, you will be awarded 10 lingots. (5 to replace the 5 you wagered, and 5 as reward.)

DOUBLE or NOTHING: if you wager 5 lingots and you finish the challenge (7 day streak), you get DOUBLE (5 x 2), but if you fail to meet the challenge, you don't get to keep the five you waged, and you also don't get doubles, you get NOTHING.
