Why are comment chains forced to stop after only 6 comments?

In Reddit, comment chains can go much further.

Besides that, why am I not receiving notifications when users reply to me? The only notifications I ever receive on this site are about receiving lingots and my 7 day wagers.

Here is the discussion thread that prompted me to ask the two questions: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/6559631

Edit: Also, when a user deletes one of their own comments, why are the child comments to that comment also deleted. On Reddit, deleted comments with children show up as [deleted], with the child comments still present.

Edit 2: Is there also an extension that I can add to my browser to make browsing the Duolingo forums more enjoyable, like Reddit Enhancement Suite for Reddit? And why is there not a link to help with formatting that appears when I go to post a comment, like there is in Reddit?

You can activate email notifications, but they are not just going to be for replies to your posts, but for any post in a discussion you're following. Posting in a discussion will make it automatically followed, but there is a button at the top of the page where you can follow/unfollow any discussion. To activate notifications, go to Settings and then click on Notifications in the right-hand side list.

In https://www.duolingo.com/settings/notifications, I have the box next to "Email me when... Somebody responds to a discussion I'm following" already checked. However, I don't receive email notifications from Duolingo about that, and the only two emails I have ever received from it have been for verifying my email and a "Welcome to Duolingo Plus" email.

I think it might be that I'm using a school email with this account instead of a personal email, as when I tried to verify my Reddit account with my school email, I didn't receive verification emails. However, when I tried to verify my Reddit account with my personal email, it worked.

Update: I've changed the email associated with this account to be my personal email, and now I do receive notifications about replies to my posts and comments! :)

At least 1/3 of our computer screen is wasted with empty grey space on the right side.

The white "discussion panel" is limited in width.

If you scroll down it's only an grey area on the right.
If you scroll to the top, there is the blue area for ads and above this the grey area with the "related discussions".

In many cases, the forum html / css layout even fails to display quotes or longer comments on the 5th or 6th sub-level.

Try to patch the html / css code with a Tampermonkey user script, Stylus style sheet and "uBlock Origin" to better use the whole monitor width space for the limited white forum comment discussion area and to extend it.

I'd say it's half, at least; that's what mine looks like.

In case if you were confused by my previous comment, "ELI5" means "Explain Like I'm Five".

ELI5 - Explain like I'm 5 (years old) - A request to explain something in simple terms (also a subreddit).
