Dinner for One - A German Tradition on New Year's Eve (Silvester)
we have a tradition on New Year's Eve, we think is very british. But it isn't. In fact nobody in Great Britain or the USA knows 'Dinner for one'. I learned that not until I was an adult.
Germans watch 'Dinner for one' on New Year's Eve. On any channel at any time, but we watch. It makes for the most of us the party complete. Without it would be like .... Silvester without melting lead over a flame to tell your fortune for the new year, sparkling wine/champagne or without fireworks.
Now I read that 'Dinner for one' is broadcast in the UK for the very first time but I don't know when. So if you missed it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN9edpdCH7c
It shaped our conception of 'what is british' a lot :-)
best regards, Angel
I have to laugh just thinking about it. My father and I used to laugh our b^tts off every year, while my mom was just shaking her head at the nonsense - and at us!
There are not a lot of traditions we have in our family but! Kids decorate the christmas tree on Christmas Eve while we play 'Wir warten auf’s Christkind' from Die toten Hosen and at New Year's Eve we watch 'Dinner for one', drinking at least one bottle of 'Asti' and a jigger of Jägermeister at the end. It's rather an obligation than a tradition :-))
OMG I LOVE"Dinner for One"! I have watched it every year since my professor had my class watch it for New Years. Now I watch it here in Germany too. :)
To make sure none of the students will miss out on the tradition in case maybe they go on vacation, one of our Chemistry teachers watched "Dinner for one" in the last Chemistry hour before the winter break. With every single one of his classes. He never tired of it. And he decorated the big Chemistry room teacher table with Chemistry accessories to resemble the decorated table in the sketch, sometimes walking around it, mimicing the actor.
