I miss the Vocabulary tab...

I liked being able to look at my words and try to drill them in, having a list helped me a lot.

Anyone have any guesses on when it's coming back?

There hasn't been a lot said, which is really a pity. It seems a lot on of people on the team likely don't value vocab drilling because it doesn't fit their own learning style, but I really wish Luis and everyone would keep in mind that people learn differently. Duolingo has a great way of teaching learning implicitly but everyone who needs more explicit learning (drills, grammar details) has to go elsewhere to supplement their studies. Which is okay for me, I can go elsewhere, but I think the goal should be to make Duolingo the one-stop for everything, right?

I'm similarly minded, I'm having so much trouble keeping German genders straight... I'd like to see which words I keep forgetting, and skip over those I already know.

Ah, I know this one - "late April, or early May".

I feel like it being 13 May, we should be able to interpret it as 'any day now'. We will see...

When the new interface was rolled out to everyone, I made the prediction that because there is not a strong commitment to returning the vocabulary tools in a timely manner, competing priorities at Duolingo will result in delay after delay until it's eventually forgotten. Several months on, they've done nothing to make me think differently. They refuse to even talk about features and design decisions that should already be made if it's being actively worked on.

Until a week or two ago, much of the old vocabulary information (individual word practices, usage examples, definitions, conjugation tables) was still available by direct linking using vocabulary lists like the ones I shared with the Spanish and German communities several months ago or through xydrolase's user script. Unfortunately, that's all gone now. Some, myself included initially, thought this might be a sign that they're close to unveiling a new vocab system, but I've come to think it's nothing more than cleanup like an arborist removing a dead branch from a tree.

Unfortunate for them, they are victim of their own success. Older members keep returning, and remembering old promises.

So let's keep this topic alive. Over and over again, just to show that the followers of this feature still hope to bring it back.

Personally I don't know what takes them so long in the first place. They already have all the underlying infrastructure for the vocabulary feature. They have this individual word page, they have APIs where you can retrieve word list for a lesson and for your overall studying progress.

I thought it won't be such a daunting task to bring back the vocabulary because all you need is some tinkering, or to be more precisely, tinkering on the Javascript side and that's it.

I don't really understand why they torn down the word page and vocabulary APIs. Unless they are really making something new from scratch in a way such that the older API is simply incompatible with the new features they are proposing or whatsoever.

It's a tag that I place at the bottom of the first post I make in a thread to make them easier to search for should I need to in the future. Why did you pick this ancient thread to ask haha? Which 6x6 is that, btw?

I can't reply to your latest, so I'm putting this here.

It's my username Base64 encoded. I chose that because my username alone isn't quite unique enough to serve as a searchable tag.

I do, but mostly just with 3x3 (my preference is a stickerless dayan zhanchi). I've got 2x2s through 5x5s and a 7x7, but prefer to just piddle with my 3x3. My speed's not great (50s or so), but I I mainly just do it to pass the time and keep my hands reasonably nimble.

Oh, cool

My average in the 3x3 is around 13-14 seconds, and I prefer and use the Moyu WeiLong. I agree that it's an exercise to keep your hands movable, or sort of, and also to keep your brain "movable" ;)
A little advice: if you someday want to go to a competition, you won't be able to compete with a stickerless cube. That happened to me once, lol.

I found a cuber :) (Well, you did, actually :D)

Yeah, I've got no intent to ever compete, though I do have a few other 3x3s including a Dayan Guhong and Zhanchi w/ stickers as well as a couple of ShengShous. Like I said, I mainly just goof around with them as a passtime, and for that, I like the stickerless cube better. I'm too old to be too obsessive about speed haha.

I think they were just trying to calm everybody down with an unrealistic estimate. I interpret it as "whenever it's ready."

(Personally - based on some comments Luis has made), I don't think they ever really planned on returning the vocab tab, and I find it odd after months of non-answers, they give us a goal that they couldn't make.
Don't they know, always overestimate completion dates. People are always happy when you meet a date early and mad when you miss one :).

Yep. The moment I heard them say the late April or early May thing I knew they were going to miss it. I just really wish they would communicate with us what the situation is, like let us know if it's coming this month at all, or that they decided just not to bring it back.

I just saw that Kristine mentioned here that the teams feature has been pushed back. As far as I can tell, the teams system had a higher priority than vocab, so I doubt it's good news for our vocab hopes.

Yeah, I see. It seems that they are now focused on some gizmos for iOS users rather than necessary stuff. Sad, but it's sadder that they won't even reply and at least say the bad news to the community. :(

I find that I am using Duo less and less, because I keep having to redo lessons as a result of FAILING TO REMEMBER vocabulary that I would have been able to drum in with the vocabulary sections :( So I'm using other sources instead, because there are only so many hours in the day...

Me too. It was my favorite way to drill everyday before lessons.

"someday" should be a honest answer from duolingo staff, I actually do not use duolingo anymore since I do not see any further improvement since the DOWNGRADE with the new web-design... I visit the website once a while hoping to see the old good vocabulary feature back again... I suggest you to use ANKI for vocabulary practice (I really am impressed on how effective it is).

I have been supplementing at Memrise.com, only problem is the vocab they teach doesnt match what DL knows I have been exposed to, but it's better than nothing. I am in a reverse tree and its bringing older vocab, which is a good thing.

no clue when it's coming back. It's forced me to use other apps/sites/programs. I definitely don't recommend Duolingo as much as I used to, after seeing that useful tools could be removed, and not just moved to an "enable advanced tabs" section or something.

I think it's important to note that most of us understand that goals can slip or that other projects will sometimes be given priority over ones of perceived lesser value. The real issue here is Duolingo's extremely poor communication with the community on this subject dating back to when most of us lost access to the vocabulary section. The excuse given for not including it in the revamp didn't really make much sense, especially once we could all see for ourselves that much of the underlying functionality was still in place (word pages, individual word practices, conjugation tables, etc.). The refusal to give status updates or to talk about features or what shape the revamped vocabulary tools might take only exacerbates the frustration that so many of us feel. The Duolingo staff could mitigate so much of this by simply communicating, yet for whatever reason they choose not to.

A further issue is that Duolingo have allowed these forums to degrade into group-think wishlists. I suspect occasionally Duo reads one and says "yeh let's implement that"... So instead of a vocabulary list we end up with another unwanted and untested feature.

Lots of simple things could be done, but the ship needs some steering.

If you really want it back, send it in as a support question. It will prove whether or not people are serious about this.

They don't have to read the forum. Support questions generate autobot emails and it starts a ticket. Which someone will have to deal with. Even just to delete it. If significant numbers of tickets are about this issue it will clutter their system eating up resources in ticket sorting and delaying other tickets.

There are business guesstimates in customer service that for every 1 person who takes the time to email or write a complaint, there are about 10 more who agree and may leave unless the issue is resolved.

"Late April/early May" was the last report from DL. It's now mid-May.

Like some others here, I used to come to DL daily to practice, but have found that without the vocabulary, it really limits the learning/refreshing curve since the practice lessons are very repetitious and leave out many of the words that have already been "learned."

I'm not sure if they actually have plans for returning the vocabulary lists, but it would seem to be a huge misstep if they do not. That would definitely change my enthusiasm for this site and whether or not I refer others to it. Vocabulary is essential for both first-time learners and for those who wish to become or remain fluent. Claiming to be "too busy" with other aspects of the site is not an excuse. Shoring up the fundamentals is more important than adding new features like a Lingot store or adding a paid efficiency test. It's hard to be efficient when you can't review the words you need to review most, but can't.

I can tell you that it won't be "never" because we have the localization strings of "Vocabulary" in the incubator.

Last time I checked with Duo staff, the Vocabulary section will be back in the future. However, there are HUMONGOUS number of things that the Duo team is working on and they really don't want to over-promise about the date. Please bear with them and remember that they are only a small team of 33.

By the way, I miss the Vocabulary tab as well.

Part of the problem here is that they did guesstimate a deadline. Which is now passed.

Many people would be happy with an update and a revised timeline rather than the total silence we've been getting.

Somehow the pessimist in me hasn't taken over, yet. They have committed to returning it, and even stated a date (late April/early May). That says a lot. That date has slipped, but dates often do that. Yeah, they could about-face and say "nope, we've changed our mind," but that would be a really sleazy and stupid thing to do. I'd take my interest elsewhere at that point (and it's already heavily divided, thanks to this design blunder).

I seriously hope they do not drop the ball on this. It's absurd that a language site doesn't give us a list of what we've learned. Especially a site that used to have it. And especially a site that attempts to 'gamify' (cringe) the process of language learning -- don't they realize that hoarding and achievements (boasting, personal accomplishment, ownership e.g.,"these are mine!", etc.) are part of what attracts people to games?

Here's some kind of alternative for the vocabulary tab while it is being brought back to life (hope it is) http://quizlet.com - just type "duolingo [language you learn] [the name of the lesson]" in the search tab, almost all of them might be found there, and there's not just the list of the words but also some nice ways to practice them.

I miss it, too. I used to come over to that tab and learn those words thoroughly, then going to my iPad to play the "game" to see if I knew them. Now I have to go daily to my Oggi in Italia book and come back to duolingo just on Fridays to test myself. Please bring grammar and vocabulary back!
