Can your skills decay?
I was wondering... For example, if the first skill of my course was golden and I didn't practice it for a while, would it go down in level or remain gold?
Thanks, Saph xo
Under the new crown system, there won't be a drop in the number of crowns you have. HOWEVER, if you don't practice your language skills they will decay. And Duolingo does keep track of its guesses of the decay; they just don't post it on the web site.
Go to https://duome.eu/SapphireSings/progress and you'll see that the following skills are no longer at 100%: Friends 2 Nature Family 3 School 2 Food 2 Routines 3
Your overall course strength is 96%, which is an impressively high number.
BTW, that's an impressive number of followers on your YouTube channel.
Can your skills decay?
Mine do. And not just in languages. lol
As far as duolingo skills it's not like it was eight months ago where your little golden egg became brightly colored after a while and that's when you would know what to practice. That doesn't happen anymore. (I think that was the main point of contention. People could no longer tell at a glance what they need to practice.)
a while ago, the highest you could get was level 2? 3? then duo updated, and you could go to 5. your skills don't go down from lack of practice, tho
They used to under the old system, but not under the new one. Once you complete a skill/lesson to Crown level 5, it stays Gold at Crown level 5.
However, your language strength in that skill/lesson can weaken if you don't practice the lesson/words or if you get words contained within it wrong elsewhere. You can see this in your Progress Tree over on duome. If you look at mine:
You can see under Strength some lessons are at 100%, some at 75% and some at 50%. So what they're indicating is, I need to practice those lessons back up to 100%.
crown gold skills will not (L5), unless there is a tree update.
However, Skill strength and related words will decay: http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Strength

This has already been answered, but just to help clear things up a bit (to be part of the fun), your skills in Duolingo will not decay. As Thomas.Heiss stated, your words will decay, but not your skill tree. Your skills in terms of language learning outside of Duolingo, will "decay" as I'm sure you already know. There is a formula for Duolingo that works better with doing it every day, but other than that, there is no skill "decay" in Duolingo.
